Automatic Trans with no filter?

I bought TH400 Filter kit (TF206) from AutoZone. I brought-in cover to confirm gasket fit ... 13 bolt pattern fits. But, crawled back under truck after I got back from parts store and no filter to replace? Please see picture. This is a 1967 C20 with stock TH400. I need gasket but should I return filter?

That big block looking thingy on the side is your filter..I think its used from 64-67..looks like this..

WoW - that makes sense and AutoZone sold me a TF206 (picture) saying my '67 stock original didn't have one so used what was listed for '69. Either way I will get my money back, but still need to get the correct one.

Does that one you picture just pull-out and then push-in with new O-ring?

Yep,you're correct.
My 68 uses the newer style in the op's pic.

Found this on Internet search, used on 1964 thru 1967 T400.

The early atyle TH400 filter you have is washable , So it is reusable just wash it out , So you have a early 67 TH 400 by later 67 they went to the flat style filter with no pick up tube

also this might be a variable pitch TH 400 if you have a 2 prong electrical conection instead of a single prong connection ,It is the Variable Th 400

Yeah dj I feel your pain..these fly by night parts stores that are run by 17 yr olds just make me grind my teeth everytime I have to go to one..I sure do miss the old time parts stores with the 70 yr old oltimer gnawing on a cigar butt behind the counter...he would know what you needed almost before you did..and didn't have a computer to have to look up a part number either.. I sure didn't know they were washable though.

I remember those days too my Friend. Seems like a different lifetime ago. Heck, I used to get parts over the counter I needed for my '53 Chevy PU or ex-wife's 56 Chevy 210 Sedan. Now its searching the Internet and eBay - Ha.

This latest project has me learning a whole new series of truck, but that is half the fun

Thank you again for helping me find the correct T400 filter. A Friend of mine (local AutoZone Commercial Guy, young kid but smart and there to help,) says he found one and trying to get for me. If not, I found a back-up on eBay, now that I know what I'm looking for.

LOL let's not piss all over the ASE tests, but they do absolutely nothing for the identification of every make and model fluid filters that are out there, or any specific manufacturer parts identification for that matter.
