67-72 SBC Headers That Don't Drop Below the Frame - Show Me Your Pics!

So I've been searching the site for information on header ground clearance. I found a lot of info/pictures for BBC but not much on first gen SBC. I currently have Hedman 69097 headers and they drop all the way below the frame. I know I am probably looking at midlength headers if I want them to tuck, but I wanted to see if anyone had any creative solutions or if there is an off-the-shelf header that tucks.

Does anyone have full length or tri-y headers on their 67-72 trucks with a 1st Gen SBC that do not drop below the frame? Pics would be awesome.

If you scroll down and click on details. Says allows exhaust to be tucked up for maximum ground clearance.

Re: 67-72 SBC Headers That Don't Drop Below the Frame - Show Me Your Pics!

nuke,

Check out my build thread (link at bottom)

I am running a pair of old Thorley 375y Tri-Ys. They were originally intended for a second gen Camaro.

I don't know who has the rights to this design, but you can try Thorley, Headers by Doug, or Stans headers. I think they all still build this same basic header.

Re: 67-72 SBC Headers That Don't Drop Below the Frame - Show Me Your Pics!

Thanks Shane, that's exactly what I was looking for. Looks like those 375Y's are for Chevelle's too, I know Chevelle headers are popular for the BBC C-10's. All three companies headers for the Chevelle look the same except Stan's uses ball and socket collectors.

This is a pic of my Hedman 69090 headers.

What are you guys doing about the shift linkage on a column shift truck being in the path of the exhaust with the shorter headers? Anyone with pics?

I eliminated the column shifter with a B&M truck Megashifter.

I Iike those Hedman torksteps too, wish I had ordered them in the first place! Huge difference between their torksteps and traditional long tubes.

I used Hedman midlength #69010. The flanges are just a shade lower than the bell housing.

I bought them uncoated in '04 and had them done in flat black. I didn't realize that was just the primer. Still this picture was last fall. I have them off now for a valve job and took a wire wheel to them to spray with VHT. If I had the money I'd blast and have coated again, but all the way. I can take pictures with them off. They are a tight little package for full length. I'd like to try to fit them on a 2wd while they are off. They say the 4wd ones sit higher. Great for the off road aspect, but seems odd the lower 2wds wouldn't be this high, if none are

Thanks for the reply , I am looking at the Headmans for my 72K10. Just want to make sure I have enough room where my slave cylinder is for the hydraulic clutch.

Re: 67-72 SBC Headers That Don't Drop Below the Frame - Show Me Your Pics!

Because of how the cross members are positioned on the 2x4 vs 4x4 trucks and how the engine is further forward on the 2x4 trucks and then the trans linkage, it's much easier to tuck the 4 wheel drive header. On my Jimmy the Heddmans that are/were on it appear to be the same as Special K's. They appear to be the same as the 63-82 Corvette and have a #1 cylinder pipe that is at a steeper angle than the Chevelle headers and shorter overall height to work with the rearward engine position.

That's why the 2x4 exhaust hangs lower than the 4x4 and why the solution has been to go to car headers and the 2nd gen Camaro and Chevelle headers appear to be the best fit.

Re: 67-72 SBC Headers That Don't Drop Below the Frame - Show Me Your Pics!

So after a lot of thinking and great feedback here (a big thank you to you guys) I went with the Stan's tri-y headers for a Chevelle. Just installed them and they fit like a glove! The passenger side came a little close to the frame but caused no issues. In one of the pics you can see how much lower the Headmans were (on the far side of the truck)

Looks great and I was wondering how they will work out on the drivers (left) side around the z-bar for a clutch... Ed

Re: 67-72 SBC Headers That Don't Drop Below the Frame - Show Me Your Pics!

7Tee,

My truck (sbc with v8 frame mounts) with the same basic headers fit around the clutch linkage. My only issue was the swing for the upper arm. I had to tweak it outboard a bit to clear.

I am sure there are pics in my build thread.
