Can anyone explain how the bed goes back into a suburban I built it and want to test fit it. trying to find out the best way to do it. also looking for the rubber that goes on top of the wood? or a suggested replacement?

Re: new bed 1960 burb
believe that it goes up from the bottom. there is a 3/4" 1/2 lap joint in the centre

Re: new bed 1960 burb
I took it out, in 2 pieces and built the replacement, but the way I see it it should go back in as 1 piece? it has to be covered with a rubber mat that is glued to the wood? has anyone done one?

Re: new bed 1960 burb
GM specifically made it two pieces and they go in from the top. You cannot put one in as one piece, unless you have the body off and all the crossmembers out and I am not even sure that works. Two pieces will allow you to slide each one under the body lip around the inside edge.

Re: new bed 1960 burb
So they put both pieces in, put them together, then bolted the bottom rails on, glued the rubber mat to the top, then bolted it to the body? man that seems like a lot of work on an assembly line? I took it out that way. but know I have the body on a cart for the body work and was hoping it slipped inform the bottom I am still going to give it a shot. I was just hoping someone already had a secret they could share.lol

Re: new bed 1960 burb
If you have the body off then I would think that you could bolt the wood the the cross sills and then set the body back on top.

Re: new bed 1960 burb
I have done it. Take the assembled floor (wood & crossmembers) and load it in from the bottom. The front edge goes up in there first. Then raise the rear. Of course this assumes the body is off the frame.

Victoria,
What did you do for rubber bed mat? Were you able to find a reasonable replacement? |

Re: new bed 1960 burb
I found some rubber-type that was the right thickness and came wide enough to cover the whole width of the floor. It had a similar pattern as the original, but was not exact. I don't remember where my notes are and I sold that truck before putting the rubber mat in so I can't report how well it may have worked.
