Exhaust routing

Its time for exhaust for my '53 3100, SBC w/cast manifolds, and the fuel tank between the frame rails in back of the axle. What choices are there? Shops won't run the pipes under the fuel tank. Out the sides in front of the wheels? What have others done? Got pics?

Re: Exhaust routing

Hadn't given that one much thought and there isn't really any room to cross over behind the axle and run the outside the frame rail either.

I've run my 48, 64 and 71 trucks with the exhaust exiting in front of the rear tire and while it's kind of fun around on short trips the exhaust drone gets to be a royal pain on long trips. As in 2500 miles with Thrush side pipes towing a 16 ft U haul From Texas to Washington. If I had had the money the truck would have been in the muffler shop the day after I got here if not in the middle of the trip.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Exhaust routing

I think torchlight's Marvin build ran them down the frame rails at the gas tank.

I'm at the same point and having the same issue except i'll either run out the side or dump in front of the axle.

I'm not as concerned about the drone that much as my other vehicle is a motorcycle....huh, what? I didn't quite hear that....

Re: Exhaust routing

I ran 3" tubing from the muffler to between the differential over the axel and under the fuel tank, with a heat shield @1" above mounted to the pipe. Allows almost another 1 1/2" between the tank and the sheild. Here is the exhaust tubing before final install.

Re: Exhaust routing

Why won't they run exhaust under the tank? Cars, trucks, and vans have had rear tanks for years. My Dodge van had a rear mount plastic tank with just a small shield.

""Why won't they run exhaust under the tank? ""

Lawyers and perceived liabilities.

Or they don't have any faith in their fabrication abilities....

Re: Exhaust routing

Pretty much every FWD car gas the exhaust routed under the tank, which is under the rear seat. Still don't see the problem.

Re: Exhaust routing

Build your own exhaust. That way you can do it like you want it.

I've also had the same issues before taking my truck to the local exhaust shop. I ran mine along the inside of the frame till it came to the rear gas tank. Then they went outside the frame and out the back. See picture attached.

Re: Exhaust routing

56, it looks like your fuel tank is much more narrow than mine. Mine is 36" wide and runs from framerail to framerail. If I had 5-6 inches on each side between the framerail and the tank, I wouldn't have this problem.

Re: Exhaust routing

How about turn-downs just ahead of the rear axle? Perfectly safe for a pickup.

Re: Exhaust routing

Doug, that looks great! Have you ever had a vehicle with exhaust dumping in front of the rear wheels? Those that I know who have say the drone is terrible. It looks as though you may have quiet(er) mufflers.
