How do you replcae NP205 front adapter seal?
How do I replace the seal on the transmission side? I assume it's behind this bearing. I removed the clips in front of the bearing. Will the bearing come out? It's not loose in there. Do I need a puller of some sort?
I have the square o-ring for the trans side, the round o-ring for the transfer case shaft, the gasket between the adapter and the transfer case, and the 2 seals that go inside the adapter. Unless I don't need one on this side since the bearing is here??? Help please.

Small snap ring first and get the coupler out. Large snap ring next and tap the bearing out. They are slip fit. Couple hammer taps will remove it.

I got it. Tapped it out just as you said. Seals are in, adapter is back on. Ready to slide the transmission back into place. That will be the start of tomorrow's work.

Re: How do you replcae NP205 front adapter seal?
Okay so I just noticed something that concerns me. Do all adapters have bearings in them? I recently just did this job (first time working on a transfer case) and when I took mine apart it was 2 seals and the coupler that connects the TC to the th350... no bearings. You could see that the seal that keeps the tranny fluid from the TC was dog eared. So i put it back the same way with new seals and it has been working good with no leaks.
However, it would not surprise me one bit that it is missing the 2 bearings in the adapter. It looks like the previous owner attempted to fix the leak recently and by what I have seen so far everything he touched is now questionable. |

Oh okay well that's a little less concerning! Thanks. Like I said, the PO left me with plenty of other projects that need attention other than wasting time on reworking something that I already did.

If you need to replace the adapter you won't be able to find one with the step machined for the bearing, you can only buy new an adapter that is machined straight hence toss your bearing that you don't need. This has been beat to death if you use the search function.....
