Mine has been replaced once. But water makes it's way in via the hinge gaskets and the untreated metal on the inside starts rusting. My guess is most are severely damaged by the time rust holes start poking through. At a minimum treating the inside is important to keep replacements from rotting away.

Too bad the guy building fiberglass reproductions a few years ago and this board didn't get crosswise.

Bigdave, I'd love to see how you go about repairing your lift gate! Hope you decide to do a build thread...
