Transmission Cooler Question

I stripped out my aluminum radiator transmission line threadin and the guy at the radiator shop told me he couldn't fix it so he recommended I get a Hayden 404 transmission cooler and run it behind the radiator. My question is, my trans line is a 5/16 with a 1/2-20 connection from what I can gather. Looking at the Hayden 404, would this work for me as far as line size and connections? Doesn't seem like it would but I figured the radiator guy would know what he is talking about.

Re: Transmission Cooler Question

I believe he's assuming you will use rubber transmission line to make the connection. It looks like the cooler has barbed hose fittings, not threaded.

On my truck I used all hard line with flare -> pipe fittings to connect the cooler. If you're interested I can dig up the model number, etc, of the cooler.

Wouldn't that transmission cooler have to accept a 5/16" hose instead of the 3/8 inlet that it shows?

Yes, please send the model number of yours if you dont mind. Thanks.

Re: Transmission Cooler Question

I bought one with npt connections and get fittings to the size and type you want. I used 6AN hose on mine.

Re: Transmission Cooler Question

If the radiator is out of the vehicle, go get a pipe thread to pipe thread or AN fitting and get someone to weld it in the hole of the radiator.

Did you have to build your own brackets to mount it?

I will take some pics tonight. I used Adel clamps and they fit around the bends of the cooler and mounted them to the core support. then I got AN style bulkheadfittings and piped it through the core support. Hard lined the entire way. no hoses.

Re: Transmission Cooler Question

Here's a pic of mine - wasn't intended to be a pic of the trans cooler, but it's visible, so figured I'd share it.

Re: Transmission Cooler Question

I will get a picture of mine. I would mount it in front of the radiator. Behind the radiator the shroud would hit it.

Re: Transmission Cooler Question

If I was needing a cooler (to run without the factory in radiator cooler) It would be a plate cooler like on Dave's picture not the Hayden posted.
