Oil pressure switch question

I was looking at the AC Delco catalog at the parts numbers for oil pressure switches and noticed it listed two for my 87 V10. One is the normal canister style that I have on my truck. The other appears to be smaller, which would appear to fit a lot better than the big canister type. Anyone know if there is a difference in them or are they interchangeable?
Original canister type part number 19244932:

Different style part number D1838:

Re: Oil pressure switch question

19244932 is at the back of the intake manifold for the gauge.
D1838 is a warning lamp switch for low option trucks.

There should be a third type with more than one terminal. This is just above the oil filter and is part of the fuel pump circuit. I believe it's # 10222130

Re: Oil pressure switch question

My truck has the canister type just above the oil filter. It is a pain in the butt because of its location. The other part number you mentioned comes up on Amazon but says it does not fit my 87.

Re: Oil pressure switch question

The RV series TBI trucks have a Sender and a Switch...

Some of them had the gauge sender buried just above the filter and the fuel pump oil pressure switch on the back of the block behind the intake manifold.

The Part number above only works if you have the Metripack connector type fuel pump oil pressure switch.
If it has two 1/4 disconnect tangs like the 1984-1986 electric choke switch it's Standard Motor Products PS126 or equivalent. Not sure what the GM part number is.

The top one is the sender for a GUAGE.

The bottom one is a switch for an IDIOT LIGHT.

Yo,I have this type of 2 prong sender at the back of my intake manifold and thought it was for my oil pressure gauge and the idiot light. I replaced it with a new one hoping it would revive my OP gauge which stays pegged with engine on or off. I don't see the other type of sending unit anywhere not even at the oil filter location. This truck was worked on swapping stuff '86 body '74 frame. The wiring would be the '86. I have another new gauge and sending unit (Auto Meter) Idiot Light works. Do I have another sending unit somewhere? Was planing to replace OP gauge in cluster with new one and putting the new sender near the oil filter or "T"ing it at the fitting back of the Int. manifold. Wondering if the sender in the oil filter location would get in the way of the headers which I want to install. Any thoughts????

Re: Oil pressure switch question

One of my pet peeves... People insist on calling the oil pressure switches senders.
  • A sender is a pressure transducer that produces a 0-90ohm resistance to ground based on the oil pressure that controls the gauge needle.
  • A pressure switch is just that. The switch contacts are closed or open til a specific pressure is exceeded depending on how it's setup.

On your 1985-1986 truck the 2 prong switch controls the hot side of the CHOKE heater. 1987 and later this type of pressure switch controls the hot to the TBI electric fuel pump. The 1985-1986 CHOKE lamp lights til the engine oil pressure comes up above 6PSI or so. However. Two terminal switches do not control an oil pressure specific idiot or warning lamp.

The idiot or warning lamp on base model trucks is controlled by a single terminal switch that has normally closed switch contacts to engine ground and opens the switch when the engine oil pressure clears 6-8psi.

If you have a gauge... you should have one of the big bell shaped senders for the gauge with a TAN wire. Either near the oil filter or WYED with the CHOKE switch off the back of the intake.

I'd get a 1/8" NPT brass WYE or TEE and a 1/8 NPT brass nipple. Install the switch on the 90° or 45° leg and the sender on the straight leg. The nipple should mate the WYE or TEE to the block.
