hi guys i was diggin through some old car parts and came across this , ive got a pretty good idea what it does , im not going to put it on anything , i was wondering , how old is it roughly , value ? and just how they were hooked up , it is a Marvel Mystery Oil oiler for top cylinder , did it hook to the carb and slowly deliver marvel oil to the fuel ? it says to adjust for 1 qt every 1000 miles , it is in really good shape , still has a litle oil in it , jar isnt cracked anywhere and everithing seems to be in great working order , the little spring door works great , and the brass adjust ment is very very free , but not loose , so hit me wiht it guys , whats it all about , did you ever run one ? ive seen similiar setups ran before but not one quite like this .

Marvel oilers were popular years ago; (50's). I've seen alot of them on Merc flatheads. I still use Marvel in some of my older engines.

Can't really say how that device works, but you can still buy Marvel Mystery Oil. We used to use it as after-run oil for our R/C airplane engines...it's good stuff, great for loosening up things that are gummed up or stuck. It smells good, too!

I can honestly say I am not old enough to have been around when that was used. From the looks of it, it is hooked up to a vacuum sorce on the carb. As the engine runs it would suck a small amount of oil out(1 quart/1000 miles) to lube the top cylinders and valve train. The screw at the top would control the orifice size and how much oil could be pulled out per mile.

DA-BURB'S got the right idea,was a pretty common accessory to find on ford flathead engines and model a&t's also . i remember seein them in the jcwhitney cat when i was a kid

Used to see the same setup for water injection to help cool the intake charge.I don't know whether it worked or not.

It looks like a common gravity feed oiler which was standard on most rotating machinery before pressure oil systems and sealed bearings were perfected.

Water injection works, and works well...but the maintenance involved with keeping the system free of scale and corrosion, as well as filling up with gasoline and water simultaneously, proved to be intolerable for most people. In other words, the pain outweighed the gain...
