Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
I think I may have painted myself into a corner slightly.
I searched and found a few threads talking about routing exhaust on lowered trucks etc. But none had my combo and I am still concerned I am screwed. I have a '70 C10 short fleet. We are just completing the install on a 454 and will have to get custom exhaust done. I have the porterbuilt brackets with tanks and compressors on the outside of the frame where all the pics show them mounted. I am running I guess a stage 2 rear PB system and a stage 1 front with the lower control arms. So no dropmembers etc.... I have seen a few guys (including one of the trucks shows on Spike tv) go above the trans cross member right up against the cab floor, through an aftermarket trailing arm crossmember, then just behind the cab they used a 'U' shaped piece of pipe to go up and over the frame rail and exit in front of the rear tires. But that is where the porterbuilt brackets are sitting so I cant do that unless I leave the brackets there with the compressor and maybe put the tanks in the bed of the truck. I also have a Boyds Welding aluminum fuel tank under the bed so it makes going over the rear end more difficult. Anyone have some advice on the route??? I don't mind cutting the 4 inch holes in the trailing arm cross member and run pipe through it. I am just not sure how to get the pipe out from under the truck and prefer not to run dumps. The cam I am using is a Chris Straub cam and is pretty lumpy. It will not be a quiet engine. The dumps will be pretty loud and blow dust/dirt everywhere.

Re: Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
I am kind of in the same boat. I have the drive train all done just doing body work now. I would like to go all the back but don't think that will be an option. I also have a step side which puts a few more challenges into the mix.
I am just going to take the truck to a really good custom exhaust shop and see what he can do. Worse case is that the exhaust will have to turn down right in front of the axle. going to also try to put in a x-pipe or h pipe if any room left. Do you have the cut outs in you cross member? I have seen a few that cross over to the outside of the frame by the trailing arms and contuie all the out the back or exit in back of the rear tire, (which is what I would love to do). Good luck and I will be following to see what others say.

I think an H will be pretty easy. But an X will be a different story. I wish there was a better custom exhaust shop by me. Preferably with a mandrel bender. But no such luck.

Re: Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
I just dropped off my truck at the exhaust shop today. It's has an ls3 with a tremec and ridetech coilovers. They are coming out the headers, over the trans crossmember, through the trailing arm crossmember, then at the end of the cab it kicks up and over the frame where the frame starts to go up, then exits inside the fender well. It's also a stepside.
If I could do it again I would buy shorty headers and try to run it outside of the frame rail |

Re: Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
Here are two picks of my new exhaust on my 69 Burb. I have it lowered 3.5" front and 4" rear. I have it going inside the frame rails to the rear axle then it bends out around the rear springs to exit at the rear. The mufflers are after the center cross member.

Re: Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
I ended up getting mid length headers. Sanderson bb8's. So hopefully that will give me some more options. I thought about going on the outside of the frame rail. There's lots of room there.
That's an interesting path on the Burb. Going to have to see if that may be an option. I don't have my truck here so will have to look when I am at my friends tomorrow. Might get her fired off tomorrow for a quick leak check. Then off to the exhaust shop maybe this weekend.

It will fit over the axle, but just... Holes cut in crossmember, 2.5 mandrel kit. Not PB stuff, but similar in function/fit:

These look like a nice option whenever they start making them. Or you could fab some up. |

That does look kind of cool. Only a 3 inch passage so I guess you would be limited to 2.5 inch exhaust. But that works for most guys.

Re: Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
Not mine but saved because it was a clean install. Looks like the trailing arms could hit the mufflers.

Re: Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
Running a level 3 front and rear with a 396 big block. We had to chop the transmission cross member and added (2) 4" pipe sections to clear the exhaust straight through. I also have a Boyd's tank and porterbuilt compressor brackets. We decided to dump both pipes before the rear end...

^^^That looks really darn good. That might be the route I have to go. Are those sanderson headers and did you do the exhaust yourself?

Re: Exhaust route for lowered with porterbuilt tank/comp brackets.
Heddman headers with the thermal ceramic coating, its what Porterbuilt recommended for headers when running a big block. My friend and I ran the exhaust, its roughed in right now, i still have to tig it together and get all the hangers set up. its just a bunch of 3" stainless mandrel bent pipes and we figured out what we needed to cut. I still have to create a tray out of 5/16 stainless plate behind the cab for the E-Level, battery, other air ride pieces. Ill tie the muffler hangers into that to finish it off.
