1971 Chevy 3/4 ton front axle parts needed ASAP
So I picked up this 1971 Chevy 3/4 4x4 the other day when a guy couldn't pay me for the work I did on his truck. The transmission was out (I had a spare in the parts shed) so I pulled it home with my Blazer. I started tearing into the front axle right away and found that the passenger's side had been run with bad bearings for a very long time. It loosened the bolts to the lock out hub and ate it up along with the spindle and hub housing. I have searched high and low around my parts stash and can not find the right spindle or hub for the truck.

Re: 1971 Chevy 3/4 ton front axle parts needed ASAP
Get the BOM # off the axle tube to be sure it's 1st or 2nd design to get started. You may be able to use '72 parts. I had a bearing go out and the spindle threads got hammered. Fortunately, my '72 has 1st design and I had a take off from a '71 from back when you could get parts from GM. It had minor thread damage is why I replaced it. No able to afford the luxury of being so particular with no replacement parts available, it was time to doctor that one up. That's when I learned GM used unique thread pitches there are no tools available fr. So, it was get out the jeweler's files and finesse it time. that's what is on my truck now.
Look on the parts board. John H in WA has a complete axle. I know it's a tense time for you not having your wood gathered with old man winter around the bend. time for desperate measures. Maybe find a 10-bolt and slap it in for now, if all else fails. Probably could find one local.

Re: 1971 Chevy 3/4 ton front axle parts needed ASAP
I only have the manufacturing date codes number off of the axle as the other numbers look like a rock or something else scraped them off. The numbers I did pull are; 6161A4 as best as I could read them as they were scraped up pretty badly too. It is an open knuckle axle. The model id number for the axle is 445F. All of the tags and other id markers are gone. The build tag is gone from the glove box too. So no help there either. Hope this helps.

Re: 1971 Chevy 3/4 ton front axle parts needed ASAP
Unless you get lucky at a wrecking yard, finding those parts is like hens teeth. The easiest alternative is upgrading to the later model stuff such as an '80+ off a 10 bolt. Spindle, hub/rotor assy. and the internal locking hub, it will take the same backing plate and caliper. Outer wheel bearing will be the same, inner will change over to a 104949. (By the way the later model 10 bolt spindles are the same as the early 3/4 ton. Just a different part number)
