Sloppy 4wd shifter

Still going over stuff on the GMC and getting a few things straightened out. Needed a new RVM, installed a new voltage reg., new battery terminals, added second battery to complete the dual batt. setup, etc. I noticed while checking things out that the 4wd shifter has a good deal of play in it both right/left and fwd/bkwd. It still shifts into all gears fine but it has a lot more play in it than the Chevy. The Chevy actually has zero play in it. I pulled the 4wd boot off and looked around in there and it looks like there is a 5/8 bolt holding the shifter pivot point to the tranny housing. The play looks to be coming from that pivot point but the bolt holding it on is tight.

Any feedback before I pull the shifter out to examine?

i've made shims to tighten up the shifter from plastic milk containers, they worked great and last for years. if it's really bad you can have it bored out and a brass bushing installed by a good machine shop.

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

I would pull the pivot bolt out to verify that it is correct. Someone may have installed a bolt without a shoulder for the shifter.

That's probably a good idea. Where can I pick up a new bolt in case I find this is the issue?

Thanks,

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

I doubt the dealer would still have them. You should be able to find one with a WTB thread.

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

Just noticed the grease fitting on those bolts in your picture. The bolts I have definately dont have a fitting so I bet I need the correct bolt. Thanks for the picture. I am going to use your picture in my WTB thread if you dont mind bluek5?

Thanks

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

These trucks didn't have the grease fitting, but the later ones that did will interchange.

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

Doesn't take much wear in the lever's bolt fitting to make for some real slop. While you have the current bolt out of there, take a look at the condition of the lever itself...

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

Hi Gable,
Are you still in need of this bolt? I have one you can have if you like. I went with twin stick cable shifters for mine and don't need it. Send me a PM with your address and I'll get it in the mail.
Roger

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

You need to pull the shift lever and inspect it. You may need to have it honed, they get a bit raunchy under there. In that case you would need a sleeve bushing anyway. If you need to hone it then go online an find a shoulder bolt to the next oversize you hone to. Then you will have a nice fit. I did not hone mine, I pounded in some brass bushings and put in a standard bolt. I only put in about a 3/8" sleeve on each side of the shift lever hole. Works for now. I will do it up right one day.. maybe! Just pointing out that a new bold alone may not get you there.

Re: Sloppy 4wd shifter

My quick straight bolt with bushing fix works so nicely that when I have time I will get my shifter honed and get some nice plugs.

You can get a nice new strong bolt and get better movement from nice bushings.

Just in case someone reads this in the future and wants some ideas.
