NP205 questions

hey everybody, today as I was washing the grime off my NP205 that will be going into my truck, I found a couple of things I had to ask about.

First is this indentation, by the transmission input shaft on the tcase. It looks kinda like a chip but is very smooth and is radiused perfectly. Is it supposed to be there?

#2, is this little contraption on top of the rear output shaft. is it a breather? if not, what is it?

#3, what do the numbers on this tag mean? I figured out the 10-11-69 and the 205, but what about the rest?

racing29, i dont mean to be rude but please post your own thread if you want something.

i found another pic of a NP205 with the "chip" by the bearings. either it is a weak spot prone to break or it is used to get the balls into the race. not sure though. ttt

Hey 1969 GMC, on question 1, it looks like a factory notch to let gear lube up to the bearing and seal. Question 2, it is a vent cap. Can't help you on the numbers...

3968059 is a part number.. just it dosen't come up in my parts books number books. Its in the transfer case range of number though.
Probably a number for the unit (np205)as a complete assembly. Its proabably a different # between automatics and standard tranny equiped 205's.

On your no.1 pic, that is a notch in the outer race of the ball bearing. Manufacturers used the groove to load the balls into the bearing as it had more balls than what was referred to as a "Conrad complement" of balls.
