Exploring options - 1967-72 GMC 4x4 SWB

I hunted down and found my dad's truck, a 1968 GMC 4x4 SWB. They said it's not for sale, because they love the truck so much. Well, I kinda threw in the towel at that point. I was done with the whole thing, I guess.

Well, my friend Wayne has like... Maybe 8 67-72 Chevy's, fully restored and all in gloss black. We had a private afterparty for our little group, and he let me sit in one of them and... Whew boy, the magic was back. I have to try my hand, one last friggin' time, at getting my dad's baby back.

So my friends are up to doing the work for me, I'll be buying the materials and everything needed but... We're going to either replicate my dad's truck, and I will offer it in a trade for my dad's truck, or we'll build something similar but also extremely badass, and offer it in a trade.

So my question is... How much does a good, little rust 67-72 4x4 SWB GMC go for nowadays? Paint isn't really an issue, we'll be repainting it. Plus, I have like 3-4 body work friends who are up to doing the work for a couple cases of beer, and the price of materials.

So hopefully this works out - either way, I'll come out at the end with a badass truck. Hopefully it's my dad's... If not, well, I'll have a truck similar to make my own memories in.

That's a pretty open-ended and subjective set of qualifications there. I'd say anywhere from $7k - $15k depending on what side of those descriptors you're on...

That's what I figured. I've seen a handful of them up for sale since I made my mind up for this, but of course I didn't have the money, haha. I'll have about $7k to play with right now, or if I wait until around July of next year, I'll have around $12k.

I did however find this one for $7900 - been in talks with the owner, he might strike me a deal. It'd be a good starting point I think, it needs some rocker panel work and a cab corner.

I wish you luck finding one. The short beds are bringing stupid money for 2wd or 4wd IMO. That blue one doesn't look too bad. Still, $7k? Sheesh.

Yeah, the prices has risen exponentually over the last 2 years. Unfortunately, that's when I sold a 71 GMC shortfleet 4X4 for $4400. All body work and paint was done, it needed interior and driveline.

I'm hoping that I can talk him down to around $6k or so on that truck, but I'll see what my friend says about the shape it's in before I do anything.

I really wish I could've talked my dad into keeping all of his spare parts - or kept them from getting stolen. Probably could use them before too long, haha.

Also keep in mind to restore/build the truck shown to a correct quality build as it looks like a rough build to begin with, your looking in the 20-30 grand range. And the resell value of a GMC due to supply and demand will not bring what a Chevrolet will in the market come time to sell or trade. You are better off going to the owner that owns your dads old truck and paying the asking price what ever that may be and having the REAL truck and memories back. A replacement / clone truck is is just that a fake/clone and you will always want the real deal. JMO

Interesting concept of building one to match, then offering it up for trade. Have you ever thought about offering up a newer truck? It could be a long shot, but if it works, would be a HECK of a lot less work for you.

That's a good point - to both of you!

They are pretty set on the truck they have right now, so I figure the only thing they'll want is another classic like it.

As for the restore... I'm only paying for parts and materials, everything else is covered. I've done some work with my dad on these trucks before, so I'll be able to help out as much as I can. I'm just trying to debate if I should try and talk this guy down to $6k, or wait until next year when I'll have around $12k. We'll see what happens.

Edit: Yep, the truck I posted about is now out of the running. He's pretty set on $7900. Gonna pass.

Must be nice to have somebody build your truck for you and just buy parts...REMEMBER: $10x10=$100x10=$1000x10=$10,000 and its going to add up fast !!!

Yeah, the guys helping me out are people you don't find often. Easily the nicest guys out there.

Thankfully I have a good cashflow coming in - being a railroader has its perks. I know this won't be cheap at all, but I'll make it work.
