Question 5-speed swap?

I've seen a few posts talking about using a 5-speed out of a full-size truck, but I haven't seen enough details to determine if I should consider it.
1). I think I read that the NV3500/4500 has integral bell housing and you would have to use the hydraulic clutch set-up. Is this true?
2). If so, how much trouble would that be? What parts would I have to take off the donor truck to make sure I got everything needed to do it right?
3). And, what are best years to get the tranny from?

From what I've seen on ebay, NV3500 does have integral bellhousing, NV4500 does not. Be careful cause not all NV4500's are the same - some were put in dodge trucks and have a different number of splines on the input shaft.

For years, look for about 91-up GM trucks.

Thanks for the help. Did the NV4500 come in 3/4 and 1 ton? Or do some 1/2 tons have them? Has anyone out there done a swap with one of them? If so, did you keep old bellhousing and clutch or swap in the hydraulic actuated clutch?

1/2 tons could have the NV4500, yes.

board member Huck has done a 5 speed swap, but I am not sure if it was the NV4500 or not. try to PM him.
