Spare tire hoist - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

wanted to know if anyone has adopted a spare tire hoist from a newer vehicle to their truck? I have started to convert mine over with a used Nissan hoist I got from the junk yard. It it has a chain and not the cable like newer Chevys/GMCS.

(heard the cables had a tendency to break)

I am basically going to bolt it to some existing holes in the top of the frame. Maybe a brace or two, nothing fancy. Not sure if I should keep the original 1985 strap or not. Since the Nissan didn't use it, it might be overkill.

The 1985 jack rod actually fits in the hole and moves the chain up and down. I just need to drill some access holes in the frame and the bed support below the tailgate. (once the bed is back on the frame)

I used the cable system off a 1998 T400 C2500 on my 76.
I kept the original brace and J-hook setup to keep from hanging the spare from the cable alone.

Thanks for the reply.

That was my original thought. Then considered that the chain system kinda takes care of any accidental spare tire release. So not sure if the strap would be overkill or not.
Since this will be my daughters truck, I figured she would need an easy way to get the spare out if it was ever needed.

Did you drill access holes for the rod? If so, is it hard to get the rod into the hoist mechanism? I know newer trucks have a sort of tube to guide the rod into place. Was thinking of making something like that if it was needed.

I put a hole in the bumper and some EMT conduit to the winch.

I don't think you need the original strap as long as it's mounted good. My bosses 04 Duramax has the original spare and hoist cable system that works perfectly fine and this truck is his chase truck when he Races down in Mexico and has been since brand new. Also it's not driven lightly I just installed a new lift and all new suspension components cause the original was all clapped out from running flat out across the desert through washes and all even the factory skid plates were mangled from the abuse this truck has seen and the spare is still hanging without issues other than a couple of scuffs from bottoming out. Lol
