Project tach dash resto

Bought a dash of eBay about a year ago. Was supposed to be an original tach dash, but the tin was definitely modified to accept the tach. Bought all paint and a new bezel, and tore it apart. Sat till about a month ago, when I got it blasted. Turned out great for my first one.

Re: Project tach dash resto

Nice photos, and nice work - those are very helpful for me as that is the one part of my truck I have not dissembled. It is still a little mysterious.

What is the name of that green?

I would be nice to have a spare complete gauge set; that way you can take your time cherrying it out and when ready just swap it out with little downtime.

I was looking online at Brotherstrucks.com and the new replacement ones are $530 to $730 - ouch!

Made by Krylon, called Jade Satin. They aren't cheap, whether it's new or used. I have another one to restore also. I bought a non tach dash for $35, and bought the tin and tach kit from Brothers. They had the kit on sale. I am going to pull my dash from my truck to get the speedo out to put in it. Or pull this one apart, and drop that speedo in. Not sure yet.

Re: Project tach dash resto

That cluster turned out great.
What brand is the paint you used. Is it Krylon?
About 18 years ago I bought my Tach dash from a salvage yard. The guy behind the counter says to me "you got a good one there, it has the tach", and I could just hear the cha Ching in his voice. I told him I just needed it for the Speedo and gas gauge. I ended up giving $20 for it. it was kinda rough but when I hooked it all up, it worked.
When you were working on the faces of the gauges, did you have to clean the numbers or the lines?
My tach has some brown/rust stain on mine, and I was wondering how to get it clean.

For the gauge's, I just gently wiped them off with cloth with a little window cleaner. They don't look brand new, but no bad either. As for the paint, I picked a satin black, Kyrlon Jade Satin, and Rusto-Lium High performance wheel paint. The needles I painted with Plastikote OrangeGlow(very hard to find). The lens is original, so there is imperfections in the original work for numbers and such, but I just used some polish on it. Gotta be gentle on the back though, as so not to rub off green lettering/numbering.

Re: Project tach dash resto

Thanks for the tips.
I'm going to be repainting my needles with a Glow Orange model paint. It may be a little different color, but when all the gauges are done in the same color, it won't be noticeable.

Re: Project tach dash resto

I know this was from a while ago, but just wanted to add a little info.
I've heard where somebody used the glow orange nail polish for their needles, and it turned out nice also..
