Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes

OK, mine seems to be missing whatever the e-brake is. I see a small lever and a bracket on the back side. Guess I need to look up replacement parts.

OK, so it looks like everything is there but the cable for the funky drum parking brake thing. I just need to locate some cables. I will post pics in my build thread when I get more done.

Fit's perfect. The only problem he has been having is trying to find the shoes for the emergency brake. I guess they are not available anymore. They look like small version of normal brake shoes.
here is a link for the parking brake shoe http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...parttype,10177 and cables http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,1696

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes

Got everything cut off and ground smooth. The only question I have is do I cut off the "ears" or leave them?

The don't stick up very high, but I don't want to have clearance issues with my bridge. The bed will be raised 9", so it might not be an issue to leave them.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes

I have to ask, are you using a 4 link? Or are you welding the trailing arm pads to this rearend and using the stock trailing arms? I'm intrigued if this would work for my 71 stepper and how you are accomplishing this.
Thanks Glen

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes

The goal is to weld on the perches and use the Porterbuilt trailing arm dropmember rear. Same would apply using the stock trailing arms. Once I get the back half together, I will have the driveline shop set the pinion angle and weld on the perches.

That's the plan anyway.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes

Nice, i was looking at one of the rearends i have, 323 gears out of a 4.3 95 9c1, no posi though, i might cut the pads and the ears off it, and see if i can't mock it up for my 71 just for the heck of it. I'll use the existing pinion angle from the stock rear (angle measurement anyway). Might be fun just to try it.
How low are you going? I have a lowering spring kit, and the shock relocation kit, but what is the dropmember for? Just to get you on the ground?

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes

Mine shouldn't be as low as most dropmember builds, actually. But since talking to Boris about his Corvette brake kit, it might get 2.5" lower than anticipated.

This forum is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing for my truck, a curse for my wallet.

Re: 96 Caprice (COP CAR) rear axle with disc brakes

Sorry to drag up an old thread.........but just to be clear.

If I want the narrow rear differential with 8.5 ring gear and rear disc brakes.....what cars do I look for? Or even one with drums......not a deal breaker by no means.

Thanks..

Buick 91-96 & Fleetwood 93-96 sedans
1566mm - narrow (all)

91-96 wagon, all
1642.5mm

All 93-96 7.625" (ring gear) housings are 1598mm wide (Chevy sedan only)

Sedan housings, in both widths, have the same lower control arm bracket location/spread distance, and will fit any other sedan frame. Wagons have a wider spread distance (approx. 2") between lower control arm brackets on housing, and corresponding wider frame lower control arm mounts.
Are these mounting surface to mounting surface measurements?

My rear is the 9C1 (I was told) and I am trying to figure out if the wheels I want to run will fit. Chopper John had 15x7 reverse laced wheels that only have a 2" backspace and his fit with minimal work.

The wheels I am looking at are 18x7.5 +51mm offset, so close to 4" or so of backspace. But with my rear end, it looks like I don't have nearly enough room to stuff those wheels.

Dragging up an old thread.

Is the 9C1 the one to get? Narrow with discs i think?

Trying to find one to use for a 1997 c1500. Want to do disc and have narrow rear for more lip on wheel.
