54 Chevy hood different than 53 ?
Hello all, looking for some insight on this one. Ive done some searching and cant seem to find a clear answer.
We are doing a complete restoration on a 54 Chevy. the hood is in need of replacement, completely rusted on each side where hinges mount as well as near the front where the latch/striker goes and all along the sides. Basically it would not be in the clients best interest to repair this thing as getting a new one would save him money. That being said, I cannot seem to find a 54 hood, the big restoration part places stop at 53, and when I call to ask they say the 54 is different, again going onto different sites it says 47-54 and they claim the hoods fit all years. just wondering if anybody has had any experience with this, if indeed the hoods are interchangeable or if they are not. Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Rick. |

I believe the only difference is the mounting holes for the emblem on the front of the hood.

Should bolt right up, as stated the difference is in the emblem holes. Pretty sure the side ones are different also.

Re: 54 Chevy hood different than 53 ?
This is the said hood in question. If a replacement from a 53 or lower year does bolt up, if anything I should be able to weld and shave the emblem holes, and make the correct holes for the original emblems yea ? Would still be worth the time to do that on a replacement hood rather than try and fix the rusted out original hood. |

Aftermarket AD hoods rarely ever fit right I would rather weld stock hood with rust than mess with hoods that don't fit right, good example look at the recent Gas Monkey garage build

After 2 months and lots of $$ trying to fit, I finally gave up on the aftermarket hood and found a decent original hood for my '50. Fits like a glove now.

Where have you guys ordered from so I can avoid it. I've done one of these before and the hood fit pretty well but I didn't order it,the client did.

Re: 54 Chevy hood different than 53 ?
I have had my aftermarket hood for about 2 years and threw the box away long ago. I do believe all of the hoods that come from overseas come from the same factory. After discussing my situation with the vendor I purchased the hood from, I gathered that those who bought both front fenders and hood new didn't have the same issues with fitting. I had original fenders and a aftermarket hood which didn't work out to well. I will ask around and see if I can find out the manufacturer or importer of my hood.
