cameo question

Quick questions on my 55 cameo----is the box different? is there a service manual that shows the tailgate workings and bracing locations ect----Thank you

you can probably find that info in the assembly manual. about $30 bucks from suppliers like brothers or ebay. also may be online at:

The general consensus was that it takes some serious $$$$$$ and for a few of the parts some serous hunting along with $$$$

I actually sold my 48 to buy a Cameo in 1974 and found out even then that a Cameo was way out of my price range. Ended up with a 57 Panel that I ended up trading back for the 48.

is the box different?

yes, only the front bed panel is the same
buy the fam (factory assembly manual) and look at section 1 sheet 130 for cameo bed (sheet 129 is 3104)
your cameo 3124 bed uses the same mounts and cross sills as the 3104 bed (6 ft bed)
there are minor differences in the bed sides for 3104 and 3124 and the bed side could be used on your cameo
the tailgate is cameo specific

sect 12 sht 33 & 34 show the cameo electrical
sect 14 sht 6 & 7 show the bumper & spare tire well
there are sections for bed assembly and the tailgate retractors too

excellent---TY my trucking Brothers---and yes the boxes are different I have a regular right next to the rusty cameo box-----the end pieces stake pockets are punched different and a different shape----Holes on the bedsides tops are drilled for bedside screws and have factory welded on nuts for the screws-bolts minor diffs but not the same again TY

Couple pics of my Cameo bed, media blasted and epoxy primed, they are punched out different for the tailgate and you can see the metal cover that encloses and houses the tape real coil and cable that goes up under the fender well

58 camaz MINE doesnt have that box!!!!! I have 4 truck loads of parts and I dont recall seeing that----Hopefully coil housings are repop?

The Tailgate Recoiler's are available, Classic Parts has them, But Expensive at $110.00 Each, Welcome to being an Owner of a Cameo!

I have an Extra Set of the Metal Covers that i might part with, I really don't like the idea of selling anything related to my Cameo, but you might twist my arm on the Covers Lol...They also would be easy to make a copy of with a sheet metal
Break, if you want to go that route i probably could make measurements and a template of mine.

also the recoiler gets mounted to a piece of angle iron and then the angle iron
(pretty simple piece) mounts to the side of the bed, the cover is fastened with six bolts and the recoiler is fastened with two, if you look close in my picture you can see how far back the recoiler is mounted by the two(Vertical) holes in the side of the bed that are 3-7/8" Center to Center. I will try and get you a pic of my recoilers with the angle iron piece.

This is the angle Iron Piece that the recoil bolts to and this piece bolts to the bed side.

this is the coil and one that i have with the coil attached to the angle iron
bracket.There is also in the picture the Cable that attaches to the coil and the other end goes threw the back and attaches to the Tailgate.

this is the other end of the cable and it goes threw this piece.
the cable has a ball end on it that attaches to a bracket that attaches to the
tailgate.

(all i got to show for you tonight and will try and show you the hardware that bolt to the tailgate) stay tuned as i need to find the piece's for you to be able to take pics of. the parts have been stashed away in containers up in my attic storage.

This is the part that bolts to your tailgate and the cable attaches too.
the spring on the cable cushions the bracket at the recoil when the tailgate is let down. only thing that i dont have pictured and have to find is their are these
thin plates that the cable ball fits into and holds it in place on the bracket
that bolts to the tailgate.

Their are allot of parts and pieces at the Tailgate, and like Ogre said, the only
thing that is the same is really the front headboard,bed wood,and cross braces.

Happy to be of help, and i will try and get you pics of the plates that hold
the end of the cable ball in place.

Were you able to find those metal covers in your stuff?

These are the flat plates that hold the cable ball to the bracket that gets mounted to the tailgate, pretty sure there are two plates to each side,
and it locks the cable in place(not 100% sure) but if you look close there are different size holes for the bolts and one of the plates looks like it is tapered
for a tapered headed bolt? Maybe someone with a Cameo can tell us?

This is one of the Strike plates that mount to the bed and Shims that go underneath to adjust the latch, anyone have the opposite side of this Plate as i cant seam to find my other side? or anyone know of a good machine shop that could duplicate the other side? (maybe in Phoenix)
