want to add air conditioning
I have a '55 1st series. I replaced the 235 engine with a rebuilt 261 engine. The fresh air heater is rebuilt and works great. I'd like to add air conditioning and keep the existing heater. What are my options?

Re: want to add air conditioning
the heat/ac systems are quite large and take up most of the space the heater uses now
the only real option if you want to keep the stock heater is an old school underdash add-on system vintage air offers this one http://www.vintageair.com/2016%20Cat...talog%2050.pdf

Re: want to add air conditioning
A friend of mine found a older Suburban with a rear seat AC unit and use it for his street rod. He went to salvage yards and found everything he needed. He didn't have a lot in it when he was done.

Re: want to add air conditioning
I do not have the link, but there is a commercial truck place that sell small box units for commercial trucks, similar to the old under dash aftermarket units of the 60's. I was given a vintage air under dash unit and bought the compressor, hoses, condenser, etc. separately. After it was over would have been cheaper to just buy a new complete unit....

The Vintage Air under dash unit is 309 bucks from Summit, free shipping.

Re: want to add air conditioning
A complete system at Summit is $1,400+ , that is where the cost is over my budget , the under dash unit is useless without the rest of the system , i was hoping for a wrecking yard unit that would adapt (import , because of size of unit ?) , not sure about the OP , but aftermarket air is way above my budget , that is almost my complete budget to get the truck back on the road and drivable again , including engine rebuild , complete brakes , wiring , etc .... i am serious when i say this will be a "budget build"

Re: want to add air conditioning
Just to give you an idea of total cost. I bought the Vintage Air unit from Summit shown above. After a hose kit with dryer, compressor adapters, R134A, a couple additional fittings and a binary switch I was into the whole project for around $700. System works great and I would do it again. I was able to use my Vortec compressor and mount so I did not have that expense.

Check out this guys build starting at post #473. He used a '98 full size chevy pickup/blazer/surburban HVAC unit. Might be more inline with your budget, I know it is mine. Clay |
