need a 4:56 rear end
Hey guys I am kinda new at all this. But I picked me up an 87 Chevy that was in the works of being rebuilt. The only problem is that the front and rear gears are different. There are 4:56 in the front and 3:42 in the rear. I have asked around and since it is a toy truck I would like to go with the 4:56. I am sitting on 45" tires. SO if any one has a rear end with 4:56 gears in it please let me know. I am in Louisiana. Thanks

I bet he meant 35", you probably won't find a factory 4.56 rearend with a 1/2 ton, you might find it with a 3/4 ton axle though. But you may just end up having to find an axle that had aftermarket gears put in, or just have your rear-end re-geared.

Well I will tell you what I do know about it. It is a 1/2 to truck with a 10 bolt diff and it has 3:42 gears in it. No I meant 45" tires. They are huge!!!! I am assuming that it is a GM rearend. This truck was thrown together and I am finding that the guy didn't know what he was doing. So will I be able to put a 3/4 ton axle with 4:56 gears in it on the truck or do I have to change the front end out. Thanks for the replies!

Well With those big of tires I would look to put 14 bolt full floater in the rear and look for a set of 4.56..
14 bolts are a dime a dozen in junkyards..But mainly come with 3.73 and 4.10's..So you would still need to get gears.. As for the front it probably is a 10bolt also and I would bet money wouldn't hold up to a couple of times of hard offroad.. you coud go a couple ways, upgrade the outers to 8 lug 3/4ton.. get a dana 44 3/4.. Or the better way to go would be get a Dana 60.. This is just my opinions.. If money is an issue.. the cheapest way would be buy a new set of gears and keep the 10bolt.. If not 14bolt with 4.56's which would be 8 lug so to macth you would need the 3/4 outers for your front 10 bolt unless you don't mind haveing 6 lug on the front and 8 on the back.. I would love to see a picture of the tires.. I have heard of 49's but not 45's...

I would say you need a 5 something series with tires that tall. 4:56 won't be enough. I need 4:56 and I only have 38's.

4:56 is not enough gear for those tires unless you have a wicked motor making a pile of torq. If you have that then the 10 bolt and even a D44 will bust in a hurry and your back to where you are now. You can find 14bolt ff fairly easily and is one of the toughest rears you can run but they will only accomidate up to a 5:13 gear. hope this helps,

Yes. if you are getting like 38's, get a 4:56. 44's would need like a 5:??. Get it?

What are you going to use this truck for?
Mostly show and putting around town? If you are going to be romping it through the mud then listen to the other responces and put a Dana 60 in front and a GM-Corporate 14 bolt full floater in the rear. With heavy use you will need these rears and its alot easier to install them when there not buried in 3 feet of mud If your not going to put a ton of power to it (like 400hp) I do think that 4:56 gears are aval. in the 3/4 ton GM 12 bolt, eaton and dana rears. I know for sure that the GM-Corporate full floater was aval. with a 4:57 and that is a good rear. Did this help? Edited for more info and spelling Last edited by DennyB; 03-24-2004 at 09:55 PM. |
