They went to spin on in 68 on all sbc. from the info I can gather. Novas with the different casting in the area of the oil filter to raise it for clearance had spin on filters from 64 when they started putting V8 engines in.
Tens of thousands of the spin on adapters got sold over the past 50 years though. If you put one of those on you have to use the gasket from the canister plus you have to use the bypass valve from the canister filter because the adapter is tightened against it and because it won't filter the oil without it. Leaving it out makes for great oil leaks too.
