Side Marker Lights

I hope this is not a question that has been asked a thousand times all ready. Why are there 2 different side marker lights on the 1972 GMC pick ups?

Re: Side Marker Lights

One for the left side and one for the right.

Just kidding. Different how? Like a mid-year change?

Re: Side Marker Lights

I don't recall anyone asking this before, but even if they did you can ask again. I think you mean the type with trim and the plain kind. Am I right? The trimmed type came along in '69 on CST/Super Custom trim level, then on Cheyenne/Sierra and Cheyenne super/Sierra Grande. In '68 all trucks got the plain type. At first these were just reflectors, then became lights during '69

Re: Side Marker Lights

This is what I have.

This is the other one

I've seen both on almost all years from around 1969 to 1972. Thank you.

Re: Side Marker Lights

The two types of lights interchange. Maybe someone changed yours?

My 69 has lights at the front, and just reflectors at the rear, and that's how the factory built it.

Re: Side Marker Lights

Nice looking truck. The side markers you have are for a late model van.

Re: Side Marker Lights

That is a nice GMC. In '72 the Super Custom is equivalent to the Chevy Custom Deluxe. I agree, what you have is the third version, which came along after trucks stopped using them but Vans still did. It was later on, in the '80s I think, when that type replaced the original designs. The standard lights that would have come on yours have a split down the center. The newer lenses were still available a while and a lot of owners install them for a cleaner/smoother look

Re: Side Marker Lights

My 70 C30 had the markers that were split down the center. I replaced them with marker lamps from a panel van. Now they have both a marker and turn signal function.
