Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

Hello all, I'm new to the forum but have followed it for a few years. I recently purchased a medium duty truck and looking for help identifying my recently acquired late 60s GMC medium duty truck. The vin number is EM5670V C3009E. It has a large V6, single rear dually axle, 4 speed split transmission, butterfly steel hood, one piece windshield. The title reads '67 but no body I have found can decode the vin. I've tried all the local parts stores, local GMC dealers, Jim Carter online to name a few but no luck. I will try to post a few picks but not sure if I will have success. Any help would be greatly appreciated in identifying my old heavy hauler.

Thanks,
Wiley

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

Although I don't know a whole lot about these medium duty trucks I can tell you its at least a a GMC 7500 from what I know its a H Series truck, I am sure more knowledgeable people will help zero it in. Good looking rig BTW! Look at this thread it may help you http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=514312

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

I agree on the 5500. Also by a couple of details in the pictures, the truck is either a '66 or '67. The Title very well could be correct listing it as a '67.

My best guess is that you have either a 305 or a 351 V-6. There are numbers on the block at the front of the engine that would tell you for sure, as Okiefromwatonga has provided by the link he posted.

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

Your truck also had Emblems on the side of it that would have shown the "5500 Series".

It looks like the truck was re-painted at least once and many times they will not re-install them like they should.

Is that for sure a medium duty and not a heavy?

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

It's a Medium, although it has the same type cab as a Heavy. The width of the Fenders on the above truck is a give away, even without checking the numbers on it, but the VIN he has supplied to us verifies it.

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

It's an E 5500. The H series looks very similar, but has wider fenders as C10-C90 Bill pointed out. What makes things confusing is that there were H 5500's and E 5500's. Most E's had 305 V-6's, but many had 292's in them. I can also tell you that truck is likely a '66 or '67, judging by the hood latches and lack of series side emblems or side market lights. For some reason, GMC didn't put the '5500' series embles on these trucks until '68. Hope that helps!

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

That's right on the emblems. The same holds true on '67 light duties. The GMC with series under it began use in '68. Up to a 6500 can be a medium duty. The Cs, Es, and Hs Blend and intertwine in that grey area. Not sure what you know so far about the VIN, but E is the chassis type (like C and K), M is the V6, and 5 is the GVW range (5500). The rest varies from light duties in those, by my reference. That's a neat truck. So, it's a flatbed with a dry goods box mounted on top, or is it just hauling that?

I wasn't aware that the early ones had no emblems.

Good eye, Tim. I didn't even notice that. Looks like it also has a Hydraulic Gate on the back as well.

That's the only way I know one is a 66 or 67. You mentioned something about turn signal locations telling what year. What are the differences there?

Yeah, I noticed the gate on the rear, too. I wonder if the truck is set-up to adapt either way or if the box is just there to transport? It's not strapped, so must be bolted

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

Tim,

The style and location of the Directional Lights on the above truck tells that it is a '66 or '67. The '68 and '69's have larger Round Lights and are located up front, like where the newer trucks are. The Square Lights tells us '70 or newer.

On the early models, the Directional Lights can also sometimes be located hanging on the mirrors, like the blue long nose truck has that you posted the other day. They seem to be that way on the very early models though, maybe just '66's only.

Re: Please Help Identify This GMC Medium Duty

Hood latches too, at least on the trucks with the 'butterfly' hoods. '66 and '67 have smaller handles, '68 up has a larger over-center spring loaded latch.

Right, Hood Latches too as well as Emblem styles and placement. Emblems on the Heavier models anyway.
