Re: 1968 chevy small back window

Proof???

Andy (Andy4639) and I went to a yard a couple years ago and found a 68 Chevrolet Wrecker truck with a small window cab.

Ignore the blue exterior and red interior, the pics are of the same truck, the outside was repainted.

You can see the interior is red in this pic:

You can see the blue paint haze on the edge of the cab. The rivets appear original and untouched.

You can see the "blue" on the hood and the side of the cab.

My post from the thread:

Quote:
That wrecker was pretty cool. The body was a little more beat up than the pics show. Assuming the body panels are correct, it has 68 fenders, 68 VIN, and a 67 small window cab. It has the correct rivets on the VIN tag. Must have been a left over cab. We tried to read the glovebox sticker VIN but it was so sun-bleached it wasn't readable.

true about the pilot vehicles. worked with them first hand on several occasions. i always heard they crush the first 500. but that may be the first 500 68 cabs not last 67s.

Re: 1968 chevy small back window

I just noticed something about the pic I posted...

The cab is obviously some kind of "67 leftover"... but what I find SUPER INTERESTING...

Check out the dash!!! Particularly the ignition and cigarette lighter. A true 1967 only cab would have a small ignition bezel and small cigarette lighter surround... it looks to me like this was a left over cab that got the "new" 68 dash welded in. Can't believe I didn't see that sooner, SWEET!

For those that have no clue what I'm talking about, compare the parts to the ones on my 67. 67's have a "unique" dash with smaller ignition and lighter holes.

Thumbs up Re: 1968 chevy small back window

I know this is a old thread but I got to looking at what Jesse said.

If the truck was in fact a 68 like we think it was and they did carry over the parts is it really a true 68 model or a carry over as we all say.

What the vin say's is a 67 are 68 is the only way to know for sure but is it a true 68 model if they used 67 parts even if the vin tag say's it's a 68!

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: 1968 chevy small back window

There's a lot of things to consider looking at that old wrecker . That Holmes wrecker mounted into what looks like a garage built bed certainly doesn't scream it was built into a wrecker when new .the front push bar came off something else , long story short just because it has rosette rivits on the vin plate doesn't mean it came that way . Heck , You can buy them on ebay today . Also it looks awful short to have started life as a cab and chassis ? My guess is its a body shop build from spare parts in their yard with its camaro steering wheel , auto column with 4 on the floor ,under mount am/fm/cassette radio. But you have to love the box radar detector on the dash , definetly from the drive 55 days . It's been abortionized . Not something I would consider a "true" 68 small window example .....Nope !

Re: 1968 chevy small back window

They Stopped production of the Small back window in April 1967... There were no 1968 or new built with a small rear window...

If the IF plate say that it is a 68 then somebody at some point has swapped the ID plate which could be a REAL problem in titling... one other thing you could check is to see what the ID number on the left frame rail says... it is right behind the Upper A-arm on the left rail...

Where did you get the April info at? Just wondering. If they stopped in April then that's over half the year was with out them. No way they could have been carry over.

Re: 1968 chevy small back window

Guys , what it all boils down to is be very careful if your new to the game and know for sure what your buying before you drop any $ on any of these old trucks , don't buy a project unless your ready for the road it may lead you down . It takes considerable time and money when you HAVE THE SKILLS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED , to buy any of these trucks expecting to pay a shop for repairs on a budget Just Ain't gonna happen ! Think about how lax some states are NOW on DMV laws then consider how lax they were 45 + years ago ? A couple rivits and you could have any year model you wanted . Frame swaps ,cab swaps , besides any body man worth his salt welding ..... Well , you get the picture .

Re: 1968 chevy small back window

That tow truck was obviously "constructed" at some point in it's life. It is a '68 C/20 Custom automatic that had a 4spd, wrecker, push bumper, dual rear added to with a '73-'80 front bumper and a Camaro steering wheel. But, that doesn't explain the 68-72 type dash in what looks like an all original paint small window cab.

That's interesting. First time I've seen this thread since it's just come back up recently. I've never, ever seen a small window 68 (and I used to live in Mesa, and used to move around all over the country)! Does anyone have a pic of such an animal other than the tow truck? I'm NOT saying it doesn't exist, just saying I'd like to see one, always assumed they were phased out in late 67 and not carried over to 68, at all. I don't believe it was an option (sbw in 68) either as stated in one of the earlier posts.

Re: 1968 chevy small back window

We must remember that 1/2 ton trucks had different safety standards than heavier trucks. The Wrecker in question is a 3/4 ton, which would have different standards than a 1/2 ton, hence GM producing the "Heavy Half" in the late 70's to escape some emission standards put on 1/2 ton trucks. Also I believe that all 3/4 ton and larger trucks came with the small back window, like the C60 shown.

Re: 1968 chevy small back window

I've never seen a small window 68. As far as I know no 1/2 ton 68 small windows were made. Like has been previously noted the large back window was mandated for the 68 year for safety reasons.
