Timing chain info needed please.

396 BB engine, #1 at TDC. Do the dots on the gears go 12 and 6 o'clock or 12 and 12? Thanks in advanced.

Re: Timing chain info needed please.

If you're talking #1 tdc compression then it's 12 and 12.

And if you think about it, 12 and 6 is impossible.

Re: Timing chain info needed please.

So then crank at 12 and cam at 6 would be #6 compression?

If 12 and 6 is impossible, I'm missing something. Wouldn't that be the crank gear mark at 12 oclock, and the cam gear mark at 6 oclock, something like in this pic? One more revolution and they'd both be at 12 oclock.

Yes crank gear at 12 cam gear at 6. Put chain on and rotate both to 12 before dropping distributor in.

Yes they would both be at 12. I just want to make sure i'm dropping distributor in at right plug location, not 180 off.

Re: Timing chain info needed please.

My manual doesn't cover BBC, only SBC, but I believe they are the same. It shows 12 and 12 with #1 at TDC, and 12 and 6 with #6 at TDC. We're all on the same page then.

Think about it.
If you rotate the crank from the dot at 12 down to 6 then the cam gear only turns a 1/4 of a rotation, not a half rotation.. i

No, I misunderstood and thought you meant you couldn't have the crank at 12 and the cam at 6. It's all good though, we're all in agreement.

12 and 6 is when the dots are aligned, so that should have been brief!
