Just Won Shortbed at Auction, Good Price? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi alls, wanted to get your opinions on whether or not i overpaid for this truck that i just won at an auction for 4600.
Some details:
1970 original shortbed c10, lowered slightly seems to be a good job. Has a 500 cubic inch cadillac engine in it with a turbo 400 tranny. supposedly rebuilt at some point (but i mean, look at it!)
seems pretty darn rust free, some bondo i think though. power steering power breaks. I live in the SF bay area, so prices are generally high, something to keep in mind. so what do you guys think, i overpay for this thing? If i was to try to resell how much do you think i could get? Looking for opinions

If it was an auction and there were people bidding behind you, then that's what it was worth on that day at that place at that time. No one here can tell you more accurately than an auction what it's worth.

As for what it's worth to resell - no idea. You'd have to auction or sell it to know, really. Auctions have a convenience factor built into the price - they parade vehicles in front of you, which is different than talking the old man down the road out of the C10 he's had for 30 years. You're also competing against other qualified buyers which raises the price.

It all depends on how they're bought, who's selling it, and how many other potential buyers there are.

Seems ok . You have room to put like 1-2k into it get it right cosmetically and running good .

Funny I was just on craigslist bay area and saw a long bed not even as good looking as that one. Seller was asking $6k so I think you did ok.

I agree with Davepl... a auction does tend to determine what a real value is... I can tell you here in the Midwest it would be considerably less...

You will like the torque of that caddy! Get to be good friends with your tire guy.
I'd say you did ok, short fleets are always pricey.

If it runs/drives, is nearly rust free and you can hang a soft magnet off of it, I would say you got a good price! Was it 4600 out the door? If so, you bough it for less than that due to premiums paid I bet.

yeah it was 1600 out the door, but I of course still have to pay the sales tax to the dmv.

I think you paid a fair price for it. A nice short bed (Not a fully restored, or show vehicle) but something you could feel comfortable driving locally is anywhere between 5k and 12k. I think getting a grille and everything in it will make all the difference if you went to resell it.

I've always believed something is worth what someone's willing to pay.

Cadillac 500 distributor goes in between the water pump and the intake manifold.
