1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Had a quick question. I have a 66 C10 2 wheel drive V8 automatic. I want to put front disc brakes on it and use the stock steel wheels. Is there a kit for that for the stock 15 x 5.5 steel rims 6 lug that will work and the brake calipers will not hit the rim?. I was told I need to use the 1973-1987 stock 4x4 6 lug rims to use disc brakes. Is this correct? Are those rims 15 x 5.5 and look the same? I do not want to convert to 5 lug. Let me know. thanks

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Stock pre 1971 wheels will not clear a disc brake caliper.
You could run a spacer but that would make the already wider front track width even wider yet. You were told correct about the 71-87 4x4 steel wheels

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Thanks for the information. Does this work with the stock 15 x 5.5 wheels and does the adaptor they use push the rim out from the stock position in the spindle?

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
bingo, that is what you need. Closest you can get to stock appearance with disk brake clearance (keep in mind, we're talking standard GM disk brake retrofits, not monster rotors etc.

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Ok so these are to correct ones then? Ya I am doing the stock disc brake not the large ones.... Classic performance Products sells a disc brake kit for my truck but they said the stock 15 x 5.5 will not work so these will clear it correct? The 15 x 6...The will fit my stock bowtie hubcaps as well correct? What is a fair price for these?

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
As long as you are not using there modular drop spindles those should work.

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
ok good to know. I talked to Chuck at Classic Performance Products in Anaheim, CA and he told me they would work on the standard Disc Brake conversion. I can email him and ask that question about the modular drop spindles (had not heard about that) Ill mention it for sure and appreciate you mentioning it.

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
I used CPP's normal spindle drop/disc kit on my '66 and kept the factory wheels. The later wheels look almost the same except the four slots are shaped differently, straight slots vs the original rectangle slots. I already had matching and painted set of rectangle slot 5.5"/8" wheels so I used 1.5" bolt-on spacers up front to clear the calipers and push the front wheels out to match the track width of the 8" wheels. I first tried 1/4 and 1/2" slip-on spacers and neither were thick enough for the original wheel to clear the caliper. I think it looks better with the wheels spaced out.

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Thanks for the information. I see you used deeper dish wheels in the back with the spacer in the front that probably works better for your application for sure.
For me I did not want spacers and I wanted to remain with the stock look with depth in the fender no mods so all 4 wheels can be interchanged if needed. The wheel appearance from the front is identical except for the the slots do look a very slight bit different, but so subtle you cannot even barley tell. The rim depth is the same on the front side as well so the hubcap stick outs the same. But from the back inside the rim is a bit different design that allows the disc brake calipers to clear and with the extra 1/2 inch and higher ridge design for the caliper clearance you will never see, so the appearance is identical front side. Your truck looks great and that set up on the disc brakes looks great on the front! Did you see a big different in the stopping power? I believe that is the set I will be getting as well. The NON modular disc stock set up. Did you do the power booster too or just the split reservoir only non power? I am thinking power but was not sure yet. Thoughts? |

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
It still has the original non-boosted single master cylinder. Stops easily without a lot of pedal effort and I really like that it doesn't have the over-boosted feeling that a lot of power brake systems seem to have. I might would switch out to a dual circuit m/c with the same size bore but it's great as is. Huge difference between this truck and dad's 66 with all stock drums.

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Ok cool. So you have disc brakes with a single reservoir, wow! But you do not have the power booster then? Or you do have one?

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Also I noticed that the center hub part does that sit flush or stick through the wheel far like the 4x4 hub? yours look flush....

Re: 1966 C10 Disc brakes Question
Yeah single circuit, no booster. Works great. The hub doesn't stick through the wheel as far since it has spacers in between.
