Re: Steam vent question
Sure gonna catch flack for this but plug it off. you just may have to uncap it when filling the cooling system. I had a customer today stop by in his 5.3 powered 67. His steam line was plugged and he said his other two conversions were as well.

Re: Steam vent question
I plugged off mine as well when I did my install based on the recommendation of my engine guy..like hugger says I caught a lot of flack for it..so much that I removed the plugs a plumbed the steam into the top of the water pump next to the hose outlet...it was explained to me that plugged off you will get hot spots in the heads.it was no trouble..I just drilled and tapped a hole in the water pump..and hooked it up..

Re: Steam vent question
Water pumps on these last almost forever. But if your worried about that get a bleeder for a thermostat housing and dill and tap the housing. I know a lot of the Buicks have the bleeder in the thermo housing and so does a lot of the 3.1 and 3800 cars from the General[witch is almost all of them.] I would figure even going to the part dept at the local dealer you could get one cheap enough and it will look factory cause so many cars have em.

As for those who don't think they need The steam line . When water is churned it pick up air in the coolant . As it travels in the system the air will find the highest point and collect .That point is in the upper front of the head . So a one time purge will not do . The 1st gen motors got rid of it because the thermostat is at the highest point above the heads . So it was not a problem . The ls engine design will not get get rid of it on is own . Can you run it without . Sure you can . Do you want cylinders running hotter that others . Most likely not . Especially on a performance engine . I prefer to have a steam line . |
