How much drop?

Santa is coming today via a brown delivery truck! I ordered CPP 2 1/2 drop spindles and disc brakes for my '63 with hopes of installing them over my Christmas vacation. I'd like to drop the front a bit more, so I'm thinking about cutting one round from the stock coils. Can someone please tell me, from your experience with these trucks, about how much total drop I can expect? I have a set of 4" drop springs for the rear, yet to be installed. Would this likely be a good overall match?

On my 66' I have 2.5 drop spindles with 2" lowering spring in the front. 4" lowering springs in the rear.

Re: How much drop?

It will give you a nice rake. I would install the rears and the front spindles and see how you like it. If you are running the original coils and switch to drop coils you might not get as much of a drop as hopped for sense the old coil will have sagged a lot. You will also need new shock for the rear and maybe the front if you are going with a shorter coil.

My suggestion is to first install the dropped spindles and springs and DO NOT cut anything yet. then you can check out the rake, and if it's not enough, then cut the coil. I was told for ever 1 coil you cut, you can expect a 1" to 2" drop, of course all this depends on the suspension and weight you have on it. Keep in mind, how old are the coils you are wanting to cut, they may already have sagged somewhat already.

Re: How much drop?

My Truck has 2" springs 2.5 Spindles in the front and 4" springs and 1.5" blocks in the rear. sits perfect in my opinion. Just did a small Cnotch in the rear, no kickup or anything.

Re: How much drop?

Thanks for all your input. I think I will take your advice to wait and cut the coils after I see how it sits with just the spindles and rear coils. I know it is a fairly simple job to remove and cut the springs later if needed.

Re: How much drop?

I used CPP's 2.5" spindles and cut 1.5 coils off the stock springs. With 215/75's the tire is only about 1.5' from the inner fender. Had to completely cut off the bump stop bracket and relocate the upper shock mount. Rides great but the tires rub the inner fenders a little on bigger bumps. I'm not 100% sure about the rear, I bought a set of used "5 inch" drop springs but they definitely weren't 5", more like 3" or 4". It also has 1.5" drop blocks.

Re: How much drop?

Funny aside- I replaced my cut down stock front springs with some 2" drop springs. I had cut a coil off my original stock springs- the front end rose over an inch with the new drop springs. Those old whooped front springs were really whooped.

I had to buy lowering spindles to offset the rise.
