12 Bolt 3 Series

In need of Differential Guru ? Have 81 C10 with 6 Cylinder , Turbo 350 and 12 Bolt Truck Differential Changed out to 350/350 but doesn,t matter i guess. Anyway in my research online that has me confused . Evidently I have a 3 Series 12 Bolt Rear. Does this mean I can only run up to a 3.42 Posi Trac rear ? Or can I run a 4:new: Series as Long as I use the 4 Series Carrier ? :ito::ito:

Re: 12 Bolt 3 Series

you can run 3.73's on a three series carrier. I wouldn't be surprised if someone made 4.10's for a 3 series carrier...but yea, usually 4.10 and lower will require a 4 series carrier

Re: 12 Bolt 3 Series

69 Heavy Chevy , How can one differentiate a 2 series from a 3 and 4 series ? This unit I have may even be a 2 series now that I have read more into these rear drives. Very Confusing, I always thought a 12 Bolt was a 12 Bolt ???

Re: 12 Bolt 3 Series

The flange where the gear bolts on is thinner on the 2 series than the 3 or 4. Pinions get smaller the higher number gear you go to. Theres an ID chart online somewhere.

Here you go......

Re: 12 Bolt 3 Series

Truck 3 series will not work with OEM 3.73 gears. 3.73 is the 4 series carrier.
