Pick up bed

So, I got a 70 LWB but I am converting it to a SWB. I know I can buy SWB sides and do it that way but that is just a little too expensive for my budget. Me and a buddy will be chopping the bed to make it a SWB. The only issue I am having is taking the bed completely apart. I took the tailgate off and removed the bolts from the back side of bed. I have found some nuts underneath the bed that go all the way around. Is that all that's left to take apart the bed or is there more? THANKS for the help

Re: Pick up bed

There's those carriage bolts around the perimeter also the rear corners are welded which you'll need a cut off wheel and angle grinder. Be sure to save all the thick washers you'll have a tough time replacing them!

Re: Pick up bed

Your welcome, you could weld temp bracing and cut the sides/floor together if you didn't want to disassemble not the best method but definitely doable

Re: Pick up bed

trust me you will be way better off just over tightening all the carriage bolts from underneath until they shear off.

We are disassembling it because we are making a high floor for the c notches I have and compressor and air tank for air bags. Instead of just tubbing it out. It will look like the picture attached

Re: Pick up bed

Don't forget about the welds that are on either side of the bottom of the tailgate where the bedside is welded to to the rear cross sill.
