Sport mirror, 1972 C10

I know this is going to be a dumb question, but how does this mounting plate work with this sport mirror?

I just do not see them working together. I am replacing some bigger mirrors so having to make new holes to begin with.

Re: Sport mirror, 1972 C10

Those screws are self-tapping - the gasket goes on the outside of the door, under the mirror, and the backing plate goes inside the door. It's difficult to thread the screws into the plate. I'd thread the screws into the plate without the door/mirror in the way, just to get a thread going - will make it a lot easier when you actually assemble the whole thing. Trying to drive those screws in fresh, over your truck's paint, with a wimpy phillips screwdriver, is asking to get pissed off.

Thanks, that backing plate is what I could not figure out, does it mount to the door or just the screws in the mirror hold it?

Just my 2 cents, I'd look at another mirror set, I don't like the sport mirrors on my truck (to see out of).

The screws simply sandwich everything together.

As he said, the sport mirrors don't give very good visibility. But if that's the look you're after, there's only one way to go!

Thanks, got it, but did not use the mounting brackets, had better self-tapping screws than the kit,

Thanks guys for your input.

You should use the back plate ! In time the sheet metal screws will loosen up. GM engineering tested this set up and spent considerable time and $ doing it properly. Yes the passenger side is of little use, but they sure look good doing it....

54 blackhornet,

thanks, I may at some point during this restoration re-do this, but it appears very difficult to get the plate in place while also holding on to the mirror, gasket, screws, etc...might be easier with a second set of hands around.

Is there a way to hold that bracket in place?

This should be a one man job if you pull the door panel off. Don't cheap out when they give you stuff like this. You will be slamming a door and throwing a mirror into the street one day.

Oh yeah - I certainly didn't mean that the self-tapping screws should be used in the door metal itself. You really need to use that backing plate. Just send the screws through it once outside of the door, then install as intended. As others have said, you're asking to lose a mirror if they're just screwed to the door metal!

demian5,

you are so correct, do not like this after trying to see out of them, RH mirror is useless, one of those decisions I regret
