Opinions on Summit racing paint?
Looking to possibly use this on my 70 for the final paint. Also curious on durability.
Any opinions/examples? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-up312/overview/

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
I don't play into the buy everything from the one monster retailer game. I buy paint from local paint suppliers. Spread the wealth, support my local economy.

Who makes the paint for Summit?
That answer will tell you more about the quality of paint. It also depends what type of paint job you are looking for. Good Luck

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
I used Summit base and clear on my 70', first time painter and feel if there are any faults in it, it was me! Two years later and it still looks good to me!! Oh, and head over to the "Paint & Body" section here, two or three Master Painter who can help out, I spent my whole time there during my paint job....

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
First time paint, and you did Black? You, my friend, have cohonas the size of basketballs.
Great job! Back to the original post Prep work is what determines the end result. Take your time. As far as where to get the paint? Go to a couple local body shops and ask where they get their paint. Go with a local supplier |

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
Agree 100% with the recommendations to go local. I did some of my own research into different processes and talked to a few body guys so I didn't sound like a complete moron when I walked into the paint supply. But the paint supply guys were great. They were even asking me questions about everything I'd done, plans for the top coat, etc and gave advice and recommendations to help me get the right/best stuff. Way better than waiting for an email reply from some keyboard jocky in customer support who has never touched the stuff they're selling.

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
I think most are on par with Shopline, which is a decent paint.
Prob the same stuff as Eastwood, which I shot on my car. The high end stuff can get crazy, esp reds, etc-but good results with the cheaper stuff |

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
Yes I have used it before, very good product and yes it is a single stage. Like said previously prep work is as important as actually shooting the paint it will only look as good as what you prepare it for.

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
I just carried a friend/customer to the paint place I use, we got a gal of victory red and 2 quarts of tan, 2 gal of MR 186 reducer and MC161 Omni plus clear and a quart of clear hardner and it was $599.95. that is with my shop number placed in the account line. The $86 dollar gal of clear with out my number in the computer was like $115. Just an idea of what stuff is going for. Jim

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
I read somewhere that it's made by Kirker but there isn't any proof. Word of mouth I guess. I have used their single stage black on some suspension parts for a hot rod I'm building and plan to use one of their colors for the body too. It turned out really nice on the suspension parts I did. Here's a picture of the front axle...

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
I have used quite a bit of the summit single stage product. Most of it is made by kirker. I think some of the base clear is made by sherwin williams. I am very happy with it. The one gripe I would have it that it is difficult to get sanding scratches out while color sanding. But once its polished right, it is tough as woodpecker lips. I did my buddies s10 with it and he had rottweilers that he hauled around all the time. I just knew they would tear up the tops of the bed sides, and they didn't touch it. For the money, I don't think it can be beat.

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
Acrylic Urethane (your link says it is) is a widely known chemistry when it comes to making paint. I'd compare it to beer... every brand is good... just keep asking enough people.
As far as durability, Acrylic Urethane is at the lower end while BC/CC urethane systems are far more durable, easy to fix, easy to polish etc. but it does cost more. If you are going flat finish, you'll have to stay with Acrylic Urethane (experts will disagree but then again, they are experts who know how to spray a flat clear...not for the faint of heart!). Just know that the more you touch, wash or wipe your flat finish, you're going to polish it and it will get shiny spots. Your best chance of success is to get to know your local paint supplier like others have said. Go in, take pictures of what you're painting, tell teh story...they should be willing to listen and coach you. If they aren't, leave and go down the street to the next store. Don't get hung up on brand... it's just another beer company!

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
Summit racing paint, I had great luck using it.
I did a two tone with red pinstripes painted in. I will be using it again.

Re: Opinions on Summit racing paint?
I am no way an expert painter but what I have painted with is the paint kits that tcp global sales. Ive tried the bc/cc urethane and single stage urethane. Both came out nice.
Glad to hear summits paint is good. StepsideJims truck came out nice!
