I would like opinions on if I should paint my frame and suspension black or leave rusty? The truck is going to keep its patina which is why I bought it.

So this is my first poll so hopefully it works.

I've added original truck pic and current state for visual reference.

The best reason to paint the undercarriage is that it stays cleaner, thus you stay cleaner when it comes time to spin some wrenches.

I agree, but will that ruin the patina look?

Often the patina look is only the outer sheet metal. Everything else often show quality. This includes engine compartment, frame/suspension, and interior.

But it's your truck! Build it however you want.

Paint the chassis. That way when the patina fade is gone you don't have to tear the truck back down,

Well let's face it...the patina angle has the outside looking 'weathered' and everything underneath looking barrett jackson.
A little ironic but with the flavor of the day...it is what it is in terms of following trends.
Personally, I would leave it unrestored underneath...but I would clean it extensively to remove mud, dirt, etc.
I think...that is the way most people like to find these trucks prior to the 'patina-izing'.

I would paint it only if I were doing a motor swap or painting the original motor. If not, maybe just clean it up.
But I you don't paint it and then add new suspension parts it will look just odd and dirty.
Nice looking truck btw.

i hate bolting a clean or new part to a greasy or rusty part. it's nice to have a fresh platform.

Paint it , You've got a vert vette sitting next to it so deep down you know your going to paint the entire truck eventually ? I mean it's like having a hot wife and dating an ugly girlfriend ?

That has to be the best logic I've read on here! Tomorrow I'll pressure wash it again and start prepping for painting the frame. It would look odd to have Shiney new parts on that rust.

I'd wash it, wire wheel it..
paint it with red oxide primer.. then hit it in spots with some mattie black paint..
then clear it... with a mattie clear..
then add some grease in spots so in time it'll collect the dirt/grease/oil sludge that make your hands black for a week..

But, being in the rustbelt I'll never understand trying to keep rusted look..
I guess it's cool to those that don't have to deal with rusted hardware..

I do not understand the attraction to patina. I've driven lots of vehicles with "patina" but none by choice. But if that's your thing knock yourself out.

Having said that, we're it me I'd try to get it as clean as I could with a pressure washer and engine degreaser and call it good.

I would clean and paint the frame if for no other reason than to protect it.

Not only would I paint it, but it would be fully rebuilt with new bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.

Paint it. Preserves it; easier to work on; new parts don't look out of place; shows any areas needing repair; pride of ownership....
