79 with 250 I6...looking for mods

So I've got a pretty nice truck that I've done a good bit of work to but the engine is still pretty bland and boring. So I'm asking for opinions and options. This gets driven once a week...tops.

I've read a lot about V8 swaps and they all sound straight forward but the cost of all the accessories required to swap in the V8 makes me think that it would be cheaper to buy a V8 truck and fix it up rather than swap one into mine.

So the other option I can see is to build up the I6. What are my options for this? I've rebuilt V8's before but haven't played around much with I6's. I think mine has the integrated head but not positive.

Post a pic of your motor!
If it's integrated it can have a head swap. 300 or more bucks.
Then the fun begins.
If you have ps then you need a new bracket. 200 bucks.
Intake. 300 bucks.
Carb. 300.
Headers. 300.
Some chrome etc. 200 more bucks.

By the time you're done you coulda had a V8.

The whole engine bay looks pretty sad and neglected...

Re: 79 with 250 I6...looking for mods

Way back in 2003 I replaced my 6.2 diesel motor with a 350 crate motor in my 1985 Silverado C10 and I have never regretted it. All that needed to be added to the crate motor were the headers, new A/C compressor, pipes and mufflers, and a few little odds and ends. The truck runs fantastic. A little later I painted it Le Mans Blue, which is a color that appeared earlier on a 1969 Z-28.

Good things happen when you upgrade your old truck. Modifications and upgrades raise the marketability of your truck making it worth more, and if you keep the truck, you get to reap the enjoyment of the new additions. It is a win-win scenario.

I live way out in the boonies on a ranch in a virtually uninhabited part of the State, but when I do drive to larger towns I love the attention that my old Chevy truck gets. It makes me glad that I spent the time and money on such a worthwhile project.

Sounds like there is a good chance I'll try to sell my truck and get something else. The actual work doesn't bother me. The never ending search for parts and then trying to get rid of the old parts is not something I look for to.

I just put the same 250 in my winter beater project. A coat of paint, and painting the brackets went a long way in making it look nice. No chrome, or bling, but nice and clean.

I'll get out in the shop a bit later today and take a pic of my 250 for you. There are intake and exhaust manifolds plus some dress up items available. Kind od depends on what you want to do with the truck, haul heavy loads or use as a daily driver, 3speed, 4speed, 5speed or auto.

It's an auto and it's totally a work truck but it's not a beater. Does everything I need but it's not everything I want.

Re: 79 with 250 I6...looking for mods

I mean why not swap it after doing all that work? Small block chevy stuff is as cheap as it gets. If you are in the US it's as easy as getting on craigslist or going to your local junkyard to get a V8 and all the parts you need. You can even re-use stuff like your PS pump and alternator with the correct brackets.

Well rather than asking all my questions here where they might not get seen, I created another post to ask a few questions about the V8 swap.

Re: 79 with 250 I6...looking for mods

Here are a few pics of what I did with my 250.
Stock rebuilt engine, Clifford intake, Langstrom iron exhaust headers, valve cover and side plates from 12bolt.com. It has a two into one muffler, duals would have sounded better, but I want any and all benefits from the exhaust that might be there. This truck is still a long ways from being done, just need time and money.

I'm getting ready to list a bunch of brand new 250 inline 6 go fast parts to include a non integrated head if your interested in discussing. let me know, otherwise I'm looking forward to your future mods!
