87 R10 fuel gauge

Feeling stupid...but I've had the gauges out of my '87 Scottsdale so long that I cant remember if the fuel gauge is supposed to go back to empty when the ignition is turned off.
Can someone enlighten me?

Mine goes back to empty with the key off.
