Re: Will a 99 4l80e work in my 03?
i am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination... so take all of this with a grain of salt. I could be very wrong.
my understanding is that the 4l80e is fundamentally the same inside and out from like 1993 to end of production.. so it SHOULD work. i recently ran into an issue (indirectly) where a 1996 4l80 wouldnt work completely in a 1993. i dont know why, yet, but it was a used transmission and i have a feeling that the trans was maybe bad? if the trans that your buying is used, is there a warranty of any kind? what if you install it and it is a bad trans? can you take it back and get a full refund or is it for exchange only? i ask because if the price is right it might be a gamble. or just have your current transmission rebuilt locally? just thinking out loud.

Re: Will a 99 4l80e work in my 03?
We are a full service salvage yard....we have hollander interchange...hollander says that the older one will not work...it must be from a ls engine... 99-07 will work...The older 4l80e does not have a bolt hole in the 12 oclock position.... they 4l80e out from behind the ls engine has the extra bell housing bolt in the 12 oclock position...

Comment above is correct, the 98 will be missing the top bolt hole, but will still work, you just wont be able to put a bolt there.
The 97-99 models have the late style cooling ports (same as 00+). A 96 or earlier 4L80E will have two ports towards the front of the transmission, which would require you to re-route your cooler lines. |

The bolt hole won't make a bit of a functionary difference. Gm made similar changes to the 4L60 bell housings.
