Gas fill tube in taillight?

I saw some interesting ideas for rear gas tank fill tubes.
One that looked real cool to me was, hinging the taillight and mounting the fill tube behind the tail light. So you would open the taillight to access the fill tube.
Anyone ever attempted that on 63 C10?
Just thought I would ask instead of reinventing the wheel.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Gas fill tube in taillight?

yes about 10 years ago I modified my bed side to accept the filler tube had to cut out notch on tail lite housing to use I think was a modified dodge stratus gas door hinge. it gave the housing and bezel a little kick out before swinging up. I will try to dig it up for some pics.

It's a homemade hinge

I think I also so one in this forum of one that swings from the side. Either way, I think it's a cool idea.

Re: Gas fill tube in taillight?

Hey 65Gregg I'm also interested in some more details and pictures. My Brother did this on his 69 and it was a pain to fill up. How is yours. I was leaning towards putting the gas door in the box side but I couldn't bring myself to cut a hole in my original box side. Was going to put it in the bed but I don't much care for that either. Details please?

Re: Gas fill tube in taillight?

Hey there ls60apache, Looks pretty slick. Have you had it in use with the light wires installed and operational? Just courious with it flipping up like that if it pulls on the wires or gets in the way while you fill up? Any welding involved in your install? Appears to be all screws? It also appears to be open in the back. Was that just for the filler install.

Re: Gas fill tube in taillight?

hello Vinceg I haven't had the lights fuctional, but to address that problem I have LED lights and the wiring will come out the top of the housing and attach to hinge so the wires will pivot at the top with no pulling. i did weld in some flat bar steel to support where I cut out some of the metal for the filler tube from s10 blazer. im gonna form some sheetmetal to make a box to go around the cap. I also cut a section out in the inner panel for access, now I wish I had done that a differently. I will figure that out when I modify the inner panels or wheel tubs for more tire clearance. altogether it wasn't a difficult process just time consuming.most of that time was spent trying and modifying different junk yard hinges. thanks!

I was thinking of going with the Mustang tank but the fill tube appears to be near the top and center.
thanks for sharing your ideas!

Re: Gas fill tube in taillight?

While I like the idea, this was done on 1956 Chevy cars and the gas fumes wreaked havoc with the tail light chrome. May not do it with this tail light since it is aluminum, but keep an eye on it.

I used a 93 s10 blazer tank a 2 inch exhaust with 90 degree bend welded to the blazer filler tube with vent. but this tank is too wide for 63-66 frames.
