I think most that do it, do so because they think that the HEI distributor is too close to the firewall. I have never had a issue with that and typically say so when someone asks about it. Some even compound the moving the engine forward issues by going with a long water pump too.

Weird. I've got an HEI on my '62 Suburban, and there's no problem with clearance at all.
