Re: Buried Power steering cap?
Have same problem on a truck as well. Power steering pump is mounted at lowest mount, LWP setup with alternator on drivers side using billet specialties mounts. There fix for issue is a type II power steering pump with remote reservoir. Kit with hoses is around 350. As long as it doesn't develop any leaks should be fine for now.

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
I see aftermarket problems that add more problems down the road.I've seen custom car's and trucks after they are built and not driven anymore. They seem to have alol them custom parts thrown away do to pitting or they warp or people tighten the brackets to tight. Most guys love seeing factory steel brackets now days. That's where the real money lies

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
The factory brackets for this setup also make it hard to get the power steering cap out. Mine just does clear the alternator bracket.

That's an oil pressure gauage

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
Which motors have an oil galley plug up front, only certain years, or smallblock only, or ??? I've seen that plug a few times but never knew when to expect it or not.

I think most chevy small blocks have them. I have know to be wrong though! My 305 did but I had my oil gauge hooked to it.

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
As 54Caddy noted, it is an oil pressure guage. The hole was probably originally meant for a sending unit of some type. I have an oil pressure guage on my dash cluster, but I was spending a lot of time under the hood and a pressure guage plugged in there seemed to be a good idea. It's a 1970 307 SB.

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
They both look like March Belt Drive systems. Part# 20113 P/S mount turns the pump inward so it is easier to get to, but it is for the SWP.

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
Regarding the pic in post 11, GM parts but not arranged as GM would on an engine..
That seems to be a short water pump and PS bracket setup made for an early engine w/ heads lacking mount holes in the end. The alt bracket mounts to the end of the head, so the brackets for PS pump and alt are from different years. The pics in posts 4 and 8 both include aftermarket or homemade brackets. The OP would need to post pics for someone to decipher what's there, but chances are its pretty much like the other pics, and not the way any year was originally set up. |

I don't understand the comment, chevy parts but not the way they would do it. This is the only way to do the parts. The bolt holes only match up if done this way. Here is my 64 Impala ss that I installed a late model 98amp alternator with a 71 C 10 bracket. It's the same way. Yes I took them back off and cleaned them up and painted them.

Edit...with further review ...I believe that kit is for serpentine system. Depending how far in the PS pump is tilted inward, the belt going to the alternator could rub against the PS pump snout (between the pump housing and the pulley)

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
It has to be too long of a belt or mismatched parts. On a proper original set-up the cap is in a tight spot. But GM certainly designed them so we could check and fill our power steering pumps. I've never had an issue...other than it's tight getting the cap on & off, they are hard to look down into, and a royal pain to fill. They're also a PIA to adjust if you ask me. The P/S pumps are tucked quite tightly down there in it's own little nook. Call me lazy, but I've gone with the "don't see no leakin' don't need no checkin'" technique for years. Never burned a pump up. GM made some great stuff.

Re: Buried Power steering cap?
The picture that andy posted was pretty close to mine.
With a shorter belt and a modified bottom bracket the top comes off now. A local shop cut a semi circle out of it about the size of a silver dollar. Thanks guys! |
