305 V6 Engine Upgrade/Swap

I just bought a 62 GMC 4x4. It has a 305 V6 Engine in it now. Can anyone tell me how complex it will be to swap over to a small block V8?

Very doable, but I would encourage you to look into the old V6's a little more. Kick butt engines once you get to know them.

I would highly recommend that!! You'll be surprised what those things can do... and they're only original once. Besides, slapping in a 350 is getting to be pretty run-of-the-mill now a days.

Agreed. I'd keep the 305 if it is in good shape! Nice torque for a 4x4. Here is great info on the big block if you haven't seen it already.

Re: 305 V6 Engine Upgrade/Swap

Totally agreed. SBC's are boring as heck and are nothing special to speak of. A good running 305 V6 will out last any small block and out torque any small block close in size. Tough as heck and will pull anything you can throw behind them. Not the best on fuel....show me a small block that is carbed and IS.....but deliver great torque and power. Bullet proof engines that were over built. A 500 cfm 2 barrel holley and dual exhaust really wakes them up. Not to mention you could always scout a bigger v6 down for more power.

I did a 4 barrel and dual exhaust with mine. Love it. Wouldn't trade it for anything accept a bigger v6.

What manifold did you use for the 4-barrel carb?

I used a Magnum intake from a 351M. All you have to do is machine the base down and open them up. With a non-magnum intake you'd be cutting into the exhaust cross over and fill welding would be required.
