Re: Is my 350 on the outs?

Update; the weather broke to the point where I could move things around and pull the expired engine today. 30 degrees is way better than the single digits over the weekend round here. Gonna clean things up a bit and ready things for the crate to go in on Thursday.

Re: Is my 350 on the outs?

Had the time this week to put everything back on the motor. Today, I got the engine oil system primed, fitted the dipstick and installed the intake and valve covers. Tomorrow it goes back in the truck, and if all goes well I will attempt to bring it to life. Looks decent to boot

Re: Is my 350 on the outs?

Alrighty, I finally got everything bolted up and worked out the kinks, like a vacuum leak and leaking heater core. Put a decent initial tune on it and have logged a whopping 170 miles so far. No leaks on the motor, but the p steering hose is dripping a bit at the pump and probably needs replaced. Runs really well!

Re: Is my 350 on the outs?

UPDATE:
Have driven a very easy 200 miles, runs great, but rear main appears to be leaking. Anyone know the process for getting this repair started via the warranty?
Thanks,
Tom

Re: Is my 350 on the outs?

check a few things first. maybe leaking at the oil pressure sending unit behind the intake, the rear intake gasket, or in back of the valve cover gasket, could appear to be a rear main seal. retorque the pan gasket also..

Re: Is my 350 on the outs?

Hello,
Joe, you were on it! I pulled the converter/flywheel cover and it was dry as was the back end of the crank area. I found the valve cover bolts very loose and a trail of motor oil which must have blown away from the block and landed on the trans cooler lines, fill tube inspection cover on the outside.
I watched my old 350 drip outta the rear main and (everywhere else)for 2 years and it looked very similar.

Thanks again,

Tom

BTW the old motor has a steel crank and KB pistons, cylinders look to be .020 over bored. Wonder what's up with that, and it has 2 bolt mains...?

Re: Is my 350 on the outs?

Very good, you must be a happy camper now. on the older engine, there's nothing wrong with 2 bolt mains. they're good for 7000 RPMs, I've never seen the crank rip out the bottom end from people using 2 bolt mains in moderately built HP engines...
