Truck Died...Won't Fire!!
Last night, I went mudding at my buddy's farm and all was well. Fired it up to go to work this morning and it fired right up, then died. It won't restart and while cranking, it won't even "hit" at all.
Any clue why this would happen? I just put a new cap/rotor, wires & plugs in it. I also just recently set the timing as well. I checked for mud and my motor was clean, so that's good. Anyone have any ideas? |

Bad canooter valve.
Hay buddy, throw us a bone here. Some important information like year, engine stuff. induction etc. Put it in your sig or put it in your stuff with the avitar. What might be a common cause for this problem on a 88 may not be the common cause for this problem on a 78.

Sorry guys...I was in a hurry here at work and forgot to tell you everything.
It's an 85 GMC K1500 It has a brand new GM Goodwrench Crate 350 with 15,000 miles. The engine is still bone stock. Edelbrock 1904 Q-Jet Carb Stock replacement distributor Last week, I put new plugs wires, cap & rotor on it as it was running a little rough. This smoothed it out. This weekend, I pulled the intake & valve covers to replace all gaskets because they were leaking oil pretty bad. The well plugs have been leaking in the carbureator, so I coated the bottoms of them with J.B. weld as the fuel was leaking through the solder (no...I didn't get j.b. weld where I wasn't supposed to) hehehe Although last night, it did seem like I was smelling kind of a raw fuel smell when the truck would idle. Anyways, this totally has me baffled because it ran perfect last night when we were out playing on my buddy's property. it fired right up this morning, I backed up, then it just died and now it won't fire. If you need anymore info, let me know. |

Start by swapping out the module in the distributor. First check to make sure you are getting power to it. If it's not even acting like it wants to crank, I'd bet money it's ignition related.
Oh, make sure you have gas getting to the carb too. |

Kind of sounds like what just happened to may dad's truck Wed. night while coming home. It would crank but would not start. Had to spark to the plugs. It was the module in his distributor.

Try the pic up coil on the bottom of the ditrubutor. Mine did the same thang once and that was the problem.

before you start throwing parts at it check for
A) FUEL B) SPARK you will see gas shooting out of the accelerator pump nozzle when you open the throttle by hand. This will be enough gas to get the engine to start at least for a second. If there is gas, check for spark. Get a spark plug and plug it into one of the plug wires while you crank it and hold the electrode to a good ground source (exhaust manifold bolt, or something) and watch for a nice blue spark. If its not sparking its probably distributor related. Check for 12volts @ the distributor then look for obvious malfunctions inside the cap then replace the module then pickup. should be really easy to track this problem down. good luck |
