Smile 700r4 swap in a 72 c2o 4x4 complete

I finally swapped out my th350 for a 700r4 it was a big job and it took me about 2 full days in my garage, it drives pretty sweet and handles great and the 4 wheel drive works really good along with the overdrive. It is like having a 5 speed, I wired up a lockup converter switch for 4th gear in the dash and that is where it feels like another gear. thanks for all your help everybody with my research!

I used the advanced adapter output shaft with my original adapter plate that’s between my 205 and my th350. I had to move the cross member / transfer case right mount back 1 7/8" I also lengthened my front drive shaft and shortened the rear. There was a lot of little things that came up as I was doing the job but nothing that could not be corrected. As far as the set up It is exactly the same as the th350 the only difference is the output shaft and relocation of the cross member. I was even able to use my linkage on the column shift. The cooler lines connected without any problems and I had to get a longer detent cable for the 700r4 and I made a bracket and a mount to use everything works really well. I am going to keep the ho72 with my 456 gears. I had to make a few bends in my 205 shifter on the floor.

Hey,
sorry I sold it to a guy down the street.
(question)
Is there something I have to do to the pics before I try and post.
for some reason when ever I try the system tells me the pics are to large a file for the system. Even if it is just one.

hey i have a 67 chevy c10 2wd with a 3 speed right now...i have a 1989 700r4 out of a caprice cop car. what do i have to do to swap them? the 700r4 has 3 wires coming from it but i dont know what they are for

I usually have to go to "Paint" and resize my pics.
I put them on a 3.5", go to "Start", "Accesories", "Paint", and then open the file. When it comes up click "Stretch/Skew" and I resize to 85%. Save to the disc. Come to the board and click the attach "Browse" and put it in the box.
One way of doing it. You can save it to your hard drive if you like.

Cool 700r4 and thanks for the help with the pics

As far as the 3 wires for the 700r4 those wires are for the lockup converter. You will only need one wire when the time comes to use it. As far as installing it into your truck I will have to check on the dementions my truck is a 4wheel drive and it was a big job.
I know for a fact that it will take half the time to install it in yours.
send me more details about your truck include current- engine, trans, and what ever else you can think of.

its a 400 sb with a 3 speed on the floor...12 bolt rear. shortbed the motor has like 350 horse...is that gonna kill the 700r4? should i just stick with manual?

your horse power will be hard on it if it is just stock. I did a lot of research before I put it in my truck. 700r4's were really bad up to 1987 after that they have made a lot of upgrades You can buid a 700r4 to handle up to 650 horse. some say that you can go more but I spoke to a trany god who builds pro street cars and he told me with all the upgrades that are out there for 700r4 putting it behind my big block was no problem. If you dicide to swap it be sure you use the a 10 vain pump, alto clutches, fairbanks shift kit and update your sun shell and you will have a very strong trany. The th350 and 400 all had the same problems in the early stages and they to were upgraded. He also told me that there are people who are using them in trucks with the upgrades and they are just fine. I have already towed my street rod and it has been working fine, howender a standard trans is the best for strength.

If you are looking for fast and durability you want a built th350!
both the th400 and the th350 are very strong tranys, most people say the 400 is stronger. But it is a fact that a th350 requires less power to operate and it is lighter than the 400. I had a 500 horse s/b in a car some years ago and I raced on the street and ran it very hard and I never had any problems but it's your preference. th350 are also very cheap to build. there are a lot of great parts you can use to make it run.

with the tranny and rear end in it now and a stock 350 it tops out before the end of the quarter. it tops out a 98 MPH. lol i just want to do whatever necesary to extend my pull to the end lol. plus im putting a 350 horse 400 sb in it which will make it even faster so im not sure what to do. how much would it cost to build a th350 for in it? my dads 86 c10 has a th350 and it sucks the big ones. lol it shifts way too soon and wont even burn em lol

You can a build a bullet proof th350 street strip trans for 400-600 depending on who does itand parts are plentyful. there are a lot of people on ebay that have them for 600- 1400 but like I said I had one that just rocked and ran mid 10's and it cost me around 450 to build it. be sure you shop around and if you decide to stick with a manual trans you will have more power to the rear wheels. if it's built right you could use any of the three we have been talking about.

If you want the quickest route a m21 or a m20 with a 1" counter shaft. the early munci's had a 7/8 counter shaft and they were quite abit weeker. a m20-21 should bolt right in to your truck. I have a munci in my nova and it is a blast.

As of now I do not no where there is one for sale. I will check with some of my contacts in town. look in your local paper and call some muscle car guys in your area and ask around. If you find someone who sells rebuilt ones with a garantee go for it. if you find one that for sell that has been sitting or what ever it is very inportant that you inspect the main gear cluster that rides on the counter shaft look for chiped teath and wear check 1234 gears and the only problem is you can't see reverse. a overall kit with bearings and sincronisers and gasgets is no big deal but if it needs more than that it can cost a lot of money. I do no a couple of guys who build muncie's for what ever aplication you want but it can run anywhere from 600 to 1600 look around localy and so will I.
