Master cylinder reservoir popped off?

Hey all,

I was driving my 97 today and the brake pedal got worse. Turned out the reservoir popped out of the back of the master cylinder.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I never have, what would cause it?

I'm hoping I can just replace the reservoir but I haven't pulled the front out and looked at it yet. I'm worried about what caused this if it's just going to do it again?

Is the reservoir a press fit or are there pins or something holding it in?

Thanks all!

Re: Master cylinder reservoir popped off?

I've never seen nor heard of this before, the reservoir is a press fit into the grommets in the master cylinder. I suppose if the grommets got soft or are rotted it could pop out, replacing the reservoir will do nothing for the grommets, I'd suggest a new master cylinder which will come with new grommets or complete with reservoir.

The whole unit was new NOT remanufactured 2-1/2 years ago. They really shouldn't be rotted out...

Re: Master cylinder reservoir popped off?

Anyone's guess why it happened, but the grommets are what holds the reservoir in place, nothing else. Push it back in, fill er back up and see if it happens again.....

Thanks I appreciate it. Only the back is loose, I'm going to pull it the rest of the way off and make sure it isn't broken before I put it back.

Re: Master cylinder reservoir popped off?

Just replace the whole master ,It looks like a classic case of cheap replacement parts to me. I buy all my mechanical parts from a local owned old sckool type parts store with real parts people behind the counter. It cost a little more sometimes but they warrentee evry part I buy unless it is a wear part. I just replaced my alternator a few weeks ago for free due to a failed part that was almost three years old.

Yeah the warranty replacement came in the mail today. I tossed a used one on Monday night and I'll probably leave it in until it warms up. Its about 10º outside now with 20mph winds. It can wait lol

Thanks!
