Best chassis for crewcab shortbed
I have just purchased a wrecked 87 Crewcab Dually that I want to build into a shortbed crewcab. The dually chasis is trashed beyond repair, I have 2 running truck to choose a chassis conversion from. I have a 2003 Express 2500 Van with a 4.8L V8 and a 1995 Chevy c1500 Extended cab with a 5.7L V8. Which of these will be a simpler swap for my project? My plan is to have a standard size shortbed on the crewcab, but have it short in front of the rear wheels like the modern crewcab trucks.
Any thoughts and suggestions welcome. |

Re: Best chassis for crewcab shortbed
Nether is anywhere a bolt on affair.
The van chassis is essentially a straight and level ladder frame. The C1500 is a perimeter frame. So which is easier. The C1500 would be easiest to graft in 2x6 3/16 wall square tube into. This way you get rid of the perimeter frame, and make it the length you need. Plus being a truck before it is probably more like the frame you need. But myself I would do the Van for the larger factory brake, and just go for it. You would have to build. Drop down for the Cab, and kick it back up for the bed. Either way keep your trashed frame for spare parts, but also a visual representation of what your going for. Also fill you computer with every shot imaginable of how things sat, and where they sat. |

Re: Best chassis for crewcab shortbed
My main reason for choosing one of these would be ABS braking and 4 wheel disc brakes on the Express Van chassis. Problem is, the van chassis is 8 lug and I would prefer to have 5 or maybe 6 lug.

Re: Best chassis for crewcab shortbed
Abs is a nanny system i rather not have and i have pulled the relay on it before.4 wheel disc can be had on anything with all the rear disc kits or swap a rear axle.Like said you take a crew cab long bed frame and cut it down to a short bed is the best and easiest way.Using either of those frames is a monster job and not many of us can do it or have the time to do it right.
