Replacement Light Switch Doesn't Seem to Work

I ordered a replacement headlight switch from ac delco and ran into two issues with it:

1-Plugged it in, bolted in place, inserted the plunger, and the switch does not seem to want to grab the plunger (which is also new)

2-Pulling the plunger out and towards the side to make the switch engage, the headlights (which when I jump blue and red do work) did not work with the switch. Is there something I ought to check here?

Any advice on where to get another switch/plunger and what I need to do to make power flow is greatly appreciated!

A couple of things to try if you haven't already. 1. Put a small amount of grease or Vaseline on the point. 2. Try twisting the knob back and forth a little as you insert it, or try pushing in on the release button as you insert it. OK, that's three...... but it will give you some things to try. The fact that the switch doesn't seem to be working could be that the knob and shaft isn't locking in.
