That's a dual snorkel base from an 85 F body. Since Scarletts motor is a 305 HO I thought the breather was only fitting. It was once mounted on a Suburban so it will clear my set up just fine. No, I don't have any intentions of running the fresh air ducting.

Aha, that makes sense. I've been keeping an eye out for an F body air cleaner housing. Good to know the base will fit a more robust truck lid for a bigger filter. I also have a 305 and was gratified to find through research that the motors they put in these trucks had been tweaked for compression and output. Do you know what your engine designation is? I.e., mine's an LE9 per the SPID. Are you running the ESC?

BTW, you can defer these questions 'til after LST, ha. I know you guys are crankin to wrap things up.

I got the idea when I saw this breather below..I posted a request for information and a buddy said he had one. It's not exactly the same, but it was close enough. I like the look of the high capacity lids so I combined the two.
Through researchI was able to determine hat the motor is an 85 305 HO L69 with the factory mid rise aluminum intake. When I pulled the pan I saw that the cylinders had been honed, but no marking on the pistons to indicate an overbore. I know it has an aftermarket cam, but no idea what the specs are.

That's cool. I have been impressed with the 305 I got in my (s'posed to be) parts truck. If you get the chance to grab the casting number on that intake manifold I would be very interested. My research leads me to believe that I have the cast iron version of the same or similar. Hoping to find an aluminum one that I can put on at some point. I know you got more than enough to concentrate on at the moment, so no need to try to get that number now. Good luck on your remaining prep! Truck is looking really good.

The mid 80s 305 has anew undeserved stigma that it's a bad motor. It came out at a time that GM was desperate to increase its federally mandated fuel average. Low hp combined with high gear ratios made very poor power with no torque.
Despite lower displacement the 305 can be built to generate good power but will never be more popular than the 350 for obvious reasons

Lets see if this shows up. Its a #14057053.
Per the Admin at Nasty Z-28

According to my book, 14057053 is from 80-85 Caprice and Impala. It also may have been used on 82-85 Camaro and Monte Carlo of the same era along with any other GM car using the Chevy 305 engine.
I have owned 3 different 85 Caprices and they had that intake on the 305s. Also, my Brothers have parted out another 6 or so of the 83-85 Caprices with this intake.
The 81 Z28 used a similar aluminum intake 14014432,The 80 Z28 used a cast iron intake but I don't have the number for that one.

Thanks! That's good info. I'd like to get ahold of one of those intake manifolds for the weight savings. I have the not very common 14057055. It's cast iron though. Doesn't show up on the NastyZ casting list, but shows up in some threads.

Thanks again, back to trackin with your Scarlett improvements. I like how you are fitting the sound system to the truck, rather than cutting up the truck to fit the system. No disrespect to those that cut the truck to fit. I just like to preserve factory provisions where possible and then update the components where technology has advanced, or the factory had to compromise to be cost-competitive.

I'm not sure how much weight it saves over cast iron, but I do like that it has mid rise runners. I feel it gives a bit more low end pull.

I'm not a purist by any means, but I have reservations about certain mods. I do not like a cut up dash and refuse to do so if possible.
Wait to you see how I am mounting the KMC20 controller. I was able to come up with a method that doesn't require cutting the dash or the stock bezel.
